DIRECTOR OF STRATEGY & BUSINESS AFFAIRS / 40 HOURS / DAY / BWH RADIATION ONCOLOGY

General Summary:
The Department of Radiation Oncology provides radiation oncology services to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (together as Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center “DFBCC”), Boston Children’s Hospital, four satellite locations; the DFBCC at Milford Hospital, the DFBCC at South Shore Hospital, the DFBCC at Libbey Park (Weymouth), Brigham and Women’s/Sturdy Memorial Radiation Oncology Center (Mansfield), and network affiliate sites; Bermuda Cancer Health Center, The Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital (CT), and The Christ Hospital System (Cincinnati, OH). Cumulatively the DFBCC Departments treat ~400 patients per day and has ~ $600M in technical and professional gross patient service revenue. The combined departments have >50 physicians and over 400 support personnel.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serves as the senior strategic advisor to the executive leadership team, providing counsel and operational coordination to the executive leadership team and other senior leaders. Participates in creating the strategic direction and operational imperatives for the Department and the Institutes.
- Acts as a key thought partner to the executive leadership team in the planning and continued improvement of Department operations. Actively participates in strategic decision-making, risk assessment, and communications.
- Functions as the primary resource for the executive leadership team in facilitating organizational, administration and portfolio management activities. Responsibilities include:
- Provide advisory and analytic support as needed
- Oversees large, often cross-functional organization-wide projects or initiatives as needed, including project design and implementation
- Coordination of key leadership meetings, including identification of key issues for discussion, inclusion of necessary stakeholders and decision-makers. Will have primary responsibility to follow up on execution of action items
- Develops content and/or organizes and gathers information from various departments and other resources; reports that information, along with recommendations, to executive members as needed.
- Serves as a liaison to partner institutions.
- Assists with strategic communications, including presentations to key stakeholders within and outside the organization.
- Serves on various committees.
- Resolves, or triages as necessary, issues as escalated by team members and/or other departments.
- Key collaborator in helping other Operations senior leaders meet and exceed goals and objectives.
- Performs varying duties depending on the shifting needs of the executive leadership team.
- Capable of developing and implementing business policies and procedures, while also demonstrating a flexible, innovative, and proactive approach to decision making. Able to present business case for future programming needs and support, and balance what can and cannot be done due to financial and resource constraints or competing priorities.
- Makes necessary recommendations for process reengineering or improvements related to clinical and non-clinical processes impacting care and services.
- Work with leadership to develop, refine, and monitor operating cost measures, metrics, benchmarks, and dashboards as necessary.
- This person will work with the Executive Director to develop approaches to answering business-related questions regarding market share, financial performance, patient volume and service utilization. These efforts will include collecting, organizing, analyzing, and reporting the necessary quantitative and qualitative data.
- Maintains Chair and Department goals.
- Works with the Executive Director on the evaluation of new business opportunities.
- Successfully develops relationships so that executives and faculty trust and reach out for guidance.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in strategy, business planning, and project management
- Health care experience is a plus
- Radiation oncology experience is a plus

- Ability to handle sensitive information, particularly in the complex, matrixed environment in which the Department operates.

- Strong experience with a variety of information systems.
- Must be able to multi-task, continually reprioritize projects, and be able to respond to time sensitive issues.
- Success in working across a complex organization's constituencies, bringing together personalities and priorities, and working through differences.
- Ability to interpret, understand, and carry out the Department’s vision and strategic intent using a high level of discretion.
- Ability to lead the coordination and strategic alignment of diverse business activities – both internal and externally.
- Ability to independently prioritize projects and business impacts. Established skills in planning and managing multiple, diverse projects or initiatives.
- Must be able to lead and work in a team environment.
- Strong writing skills: ability to creatively use tables, graphs, charts to translate words into pictures.
- Project management experience.
- Strong attention to detail and high deliverable quality.
- Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills required.
