Director of Performing Arts Job Description
Denver Language School is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the role of Director of Performing Arts. This role will work primarily with students in grades 5-8 at the Gilpin Campus. However, there will be activities at both Denver Language School campuses and will involve limited work with students in grades K-4. This position is for full-time work and would be under the supervision of the Gilpin Campus Principal. Denver Language School has traditionally contracted with community partners to provide Music and Drama instruction to students. We are now seeking to bring this position in-house and build a successful performing arts program. The successful candidate will be highly motivated to build this program in a manner that ensures its long term success.
Essential Functions and Objectives:
- Required to work up-to-five Saturdays throughout the year and four afternoons per week for Fun Clubs (Fun Club topics can be determined after hire).
- Develop and manage a performing arts budget in conjunction with the Executive Director.
- Select music to build a music library for the school and ensure that the selections are varied to ensure the repertoire reflects the school’s value of cultural inclusivity.
- Provide or arrange for regular maintenance of musical instruments and equipment.
- Flexibility on working hours - While these times can be somewhat flexible (with approval of supervisor), Denver Language School is seeking someone primarily available between the hours of 9:00-5:00, Monday through Thursday and 8:15-4:15 on Friday.
- Counsel students to encourage and support student achievement through Positive Behavior Intervention Support and Restorative Practices.
- Monitor, supervise, coordinate and enforce rules of conduct and behavior assigned to students.
- Prepare educational course outlines, objectives and materials according to curriculum guidelines and Colorado Department of Education standards.
- Present subject matter to students, using various teaching methods and technology, adjusting teaching style and method to meet student learning style.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects to students.
- Prepare, administer, assign and grade balanced assessments to evaluate student progress and report grades using school software.
- Prepare student, attendance and activity reports as required by administrators.
- Communicate with caregivers, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems; and coordinate instructional efforts.
- The safety of our students is our top priority, therefore all staff members will be expected to hold additional supervision duties, including before or after school or as directed by your supervisor.

You are a vital part of the DLS community, and may be asked and expected to attend Professional Development, serve on committees, provide insight, perform research, analyze data, or otherwise contribute to achieving our mission. Assisting with and attending DLS events such as cultural, recruitment or PTO events is also expected.
- Support Operations Team in managing the Gilpin Campus auditorium, including running the sound system
- Complete all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Successful candidate must be highly qualified, meaning they must have:a bachelor's degree in Education or Music, Theatre, Performing Arts or related field;
and a passing score on the Music Praxis Exam
- A minimum 2 years experience in leading choral and/or instrumental ensembles
- Ability to lead after-school performances and activities as part of the role at the school
- Ability to collaborate with a team of educators across content areas
- Official transcripts requested upon hiring- must be translated and evaluated, if education was completed outside the US
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience and passion for building a strong choral and instrumental program, including designing and facilitating performances
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in Music Education or Performance or related field
- Current Colorado Department of Education Teachers License with endorsement in Music Education
- 5+ years experience in leading choral and instrumental ensembles
- Experience in stagecraft and sound systems
Salary Range at entry: $77,000 - $82,000k for 1.0 Full Time Employee
