DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & DEVELOPMENT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Development & Marketing is new position for KidsFirst. We are looking for a motivated self-starter who has a track record of building successful development and marketing programs. We are an organization that is heavily grant funded, with a need to build a diversified funding portfolio. This will be a wonderful opportunity for an individual looking to build a department that will have a lasting impact on a crucial community service organization.

The desired candidate will have significant experience in all areas of development, as well as donor cultivation and stewardship. In addition to development, we are looking for a visionary individual who can assist the organization increase its brand awareness and image. This individual should also have a deep appreciation of our mission for serving youth in the prevention of child abuse. Is well versed in public speaking and donor relations.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development & Marketing will provide strategic direction and leadership for all aspects of the fundraising and marketing program at KidsFirst, including individual giving, grants, special events, and external marketing and communications. They will create and implement KidsFirst’s fundraising strategy. This role will also be entrusted develop new and expand existing funding streams through donor development, thereby diversifying the organization’s revenue base. The Director will be responsible for achieving KidsFirst’s annual fundraising goals, as well as develop and execute a long-term fundraising growth plan to exceed $4+ million in the next three years. The Director will manage the Grant & Foundation Manager, the Communication & Marketing Manager and will receive on-going support from a part-time event planner.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead, develop, and execute fundraising strategies, including individual giving, corporate giving, special events, foundation, nonprofit, and government grants.
  • Oversee the external marketing and communications efforts including direct mail, digital fundraising, website, social media platforms, and earned/paid media.
  • Build and maintain portfolio of major gift donors.
  • Oversee the organization’s extensive portfolio of private, local, county, state and federal grants.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer to develop and maintain a branding and marketing campaign, as well as oversee the development of all organizational collateral materials.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer and Development Committee, establish and implement a three-year fundraising strategy for operational, and expansion needs.
  • Oversee execution of major fundraising events, the annual wine tasting benefit, as well as other special events throughout the year.
  • Provide and present reports at the regularly scheduled board meetings. In conjunction with the CEO, provide direction and support to the Fundraising Committee.
  • Contributes to compliance reviews/audits as directed by KidsFirst management. You will also support external programmatic or financial audits which may include coordinating documentation and other supporting materials.
  • Supports new funding opportunities by clarifying donor requirements in RFP/RFQ/grant solicitations and guidelines (including KidsFirst contracts and cooperative/partnership agreements), using organizational project management tools (Asana/Salesforce/etc.) to articulate cross-departmental collaboration for submission.
  • Support research of funding opportunities; supporting development, program, finance and other team members to ensure cross team communication and decision-making about prioritization of funding opportunities.
  • Will conduct final review of proposals to ensure alignment with donor requirements and KidsFirst standards.
  • Working in close collaboration across all departments, you will manage the full life cycle of all grant award/contract administration. This will specifically include: monitoring proposal and report deadlines, submitting proposals and reports; supporting the negotiations of contracts/agreements; coordinating other contractual and financial matters to ensure all deliverables and reporting requirements are met; and managing contract close out.
  • Coach, mentor, develop and manage Development & Marketing Department.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • EDUCATION: Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree, preferably with a major in business or public administration, education, non-profit management, finance, accounting or economics.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a development department for 2 years or more, securing diverse funding streams and exceeding budgeted fund development goals.
  • The ideal candidate will have established experience providing fiscal and programmatic oversight of various grant funding processes, major gift campaigns, cultivation techniques and overseeing profitable events.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ grant writing experience managing government and nonprofit grants and contracts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high-level marketing and communication techniques to increase brand awareness.
  • The successful candidate must have a passion for the wellbeing of youth, an entrepreneurial spirit, and be a self-starter.
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills to support KidsFirst to liaise between various stakeholders including, grant funders, donors, volunteers, the board of directors, CEO, and staff.
  • This candidate will be experienced in developing internal control systems for cultivation and stewardship as well as CRM administration, Continuous Quality Improvement methodology, supervising a team, and will have impeccable follow-through on assigned projects.
  • Works with Finance team to ensure funds have arrived in the expected timeframe and that the facilitation of the invoicing/billing of funders is performed in a timely fashion.
  • Serves as primary spokesperson for KidsFirst with media inquiries, speaking engagements and events.
  • Demonstrated extensive fundraising experience including donor prospecting, stewardship, annual giving, and major gift solicitation.
  • The ability to work well with a team, as well as independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to effectively coach and mentor employees and team.
  • Experience with CRM systems preferred.
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines and manage multiple projects.
  • Valid California Driver’s license with acceptable driving record as designated by agency.
  • Proficient in MS Office and fundraising database management software.
  • Demonstrated experience in the full execution of grants (government and foundation) from development to implementation to reporting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience adhering to the philanthropic proposal guidelines and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret regulations and implement actions accordingly.
  • You must have meticulous attention to details.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 Office Suite and Salesforce experience preferred and proficient in editing PDF documents.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $85K - $95K depending on experience; Full-time employee benefits package includes medical, supplemental medical, dental, vision and life insurance, Employee Assistance Program, Sick and Paid Time Off, plus 14 paid holidays per year; We also offer a no-match voluntary retirement package and voluntary benefits with Aflac and Legal Shield.
