Job Summary
A Level I Dining Mechanic will maintain/install dining equipment. This position will also include maintaining facilities in his assigned areas, ensuring that service requests and preventive maintenance duties are completed in a timely manner. Their duties will include working safely, & working with the requestor, & helping with coordinating the work of additional shops and subcontractors as well as the hands-on work needed to finish the requested work. They will be responsible for training and mentoring student employees as needed.
A Level 2 Dining Mechanic is responsible for level 1 responsibilities and the following: Training, mentoring, and onboarding of new hires, including level 1, and other shop employees. They will coordinate the timelines for installing and repairing all types of equipment. They will also coordinate the maintenance work in the buildings they are assigned to. They will work with managers and work crews as needed to assess and correct problems. They will keep the shop’s inventory up to date and in good order and ensure shop cleanliness. They will assist other crews with projects as needed. They will work with, oversee, and coordinate subcontractors as needed. This position is expected to have advanced refrigeration & mechanical skills and knowledge.
A Dining Mechanic Lead is responsible for level 1 and level 2 responsibilities and the following: Supervising, overseeing, and mentoring of shop employees. They will be responsible for managing the day-to-day work of some of the employees in the department who will report directly to them. This position will require a highly skilled and knowledgeable person able to respond and resolve any type of emergencies that come up related to the department’s responsibilities. This person coordinates hiring of subcontractors and assigns work scopes and schedules. This position will lead the way in a cultural focus on BYU’s Mission, Aims and Strategic Objectives.
Essential Functions
- Supervision, Safety, and Project Management - 100% as detailed below
- Manage equipment installations, repair, and maintenance projects on campus.
- Responsible for budget, quality, schedule, and safety on each project.
- Procure materials and equipment delivery with vendors and suppliers.
- Update installation, repairs, and maintenance equipment in PF computer system.
- Coordinate subcontractors’ work.
- Assuring personal safety and the safety of others around the work areas.
- Ensure completion of equipment related work on each project.
- Help with pre-construction meetings which include project phasing, schedules, reviewing construction documents, equipment selection, installation verification, equipment startup, and commissioning.
- Manage subcontractors’ work.
- Coordinate with requestor, PF Planning and Construction departments, and other shops to develop schedule and complete project.
- Manage a team of workers as needed, to complete the equipment installation or repairs.
- Bring in subcontractors and inspect their work.
- Capital needs assessment (CNA) inspections and life cycle evaluation.

- Decision on how to best complete projects, maintenance, equipment installations, and repairs in a timely manner
- Communications with other shops when necessary to move the project along quickly.
- This position will have the authority to identify and enforce decisions regarding safety concerns, including stopping of a project as needed for safety concerns, as listed below but not limited to the following:
- Wearing of appropriate safety gear and clothing for projects.
- The appropriate use of equipment.
- Making sure the working environment is safe for workers, employees, and students.
Referred:
- Major scope changes.
- All decisions of budgeting, hiring, terminating, and personnel.
Education/Experience
Minimum education/experience required:
- Level I - Two years of refrigeration experience or a two year refrigeration certification from a technical school and the ability to get the CFC Certification through the state to be able to handle the various refrigerants we use on campus.
- Level II – In addition to level I requirements, five years of refrigeration, steam, flight, and regular dish machine experience. Two years of ice machine installation, maintenance, & repair experience. Level II also includes at least two years of management, mentoring, and training experience.
- Lead – In addition to level I and Level II, a Lead needs five years of kitchen appliance repair experience, and five years of management, mentoring, and training experience.
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications (please indicate whether “required” or “preferred”):
- Have a basic skill level and understanding of refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, welding food service equipment, ice machines, furnaces and sheet metal work. (Required)
- Has excellent interpersonal, communication, organization skills (Preferred) The ability to maintain a good working relationship with all involved personnel, including treating others with respect and kindness. (Required)
- Has a valid Utah Drivers' License (Required)
- Very experienced in HVAC diagnosis, repair and maintenance including furnaces, air conditioning, water heaters, refrigerators, gas, and electric ranges. Very experienced in the reading of blueprints both electrical and mechanical and excellence in troubleshooting and repair of foodservice equipment and refrigeration. Has excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. (Required)
