Job description
Under the direction of a Vice Principal or other assigned administrator, monitor and control the activities of students in a suspension center; assist in the work of the attendance office; maintain records of students admitted and released; perform routine clerical tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Escort students to in-school suspension center; obtain or assign instructional work from teachers for students; monitor students to assure work is performed; explain lessons and assist students with work.
Maintain and file detailed records of assigned student detentions, attendance of in-school suspension, work progress and behavior; prepare related reports and forms; record completion of forms requiring parental signature.
Escort students to lunch and restroom and monitor students in the performance of cleaning and routine manual tasks during recess periods.
Perform attendance work, such as preparing re-admit slips, calling parents to verify absences and tardies and provide notification of illness, filing and answering telephones; alert school administration of excessive tardies.
Operate a personal computer in the entry of student data from various source documents.
OTHER DUTIES:
Report unserved suspensions to school administrators.
Perform student records work, such as affixing labels to student files, filing materials in cum files, destroying immediate file and alphabetizing documents.
Perform varied routine clerical work.
Supervise behavioral problem students as assigned.
Notify parents of students who are serving in-school detention.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Adolescent and pre-adolescent behavior and basic student guidance and behavior management techniques.
School rules and regulations.
General and basic secondary school curriculum.
Basic office practices and telephone techniques.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Oral and written communication skills.
ABILITY TO:
Monitor the behavior of students in a suspension center.
Work independently with little direction.
Keep students on task and provide routine instructional assistance in language, math, general science and social studies.
File in alpha and numeric order.
Perform basic mathematical calculations.
Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others.
This Class must meet the requirements of the Federal and State "No Child Left Behind" NCLB legislation. Qualifications are any combination equivalent to 48 semester units of college study or an AA Degree or upon passing a NCLB qualifying written examination, and one year working in an instructional setting with school aged children.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer keyboard.
Seeing to monitor student activities. Hearing and speaking to exchange information.

Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
HAZARDS:
Contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the NCLB guidelines above.
The first step in the process will be a written exam for those applicants that do not submit their transcripts to verify the completion of 48 or more semester units. This will be a multiple choice exam that covers English, Math, and the Ability to Assist. Study materials are available in the Human Resources department. These materials cannot be sent electronically, you will need to stop by in person to obtain them.
For all applicants that have completed 48 or more semester units OR have successfully passed all three sections of the test described above, there will be a written exam with job-specific questions. Your score on the second written exam will determine your rank on the eligibility list. There is no waiver for the second exam.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Positions in the job classification typically work 30 hours/week for 180 student instructional days. The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Hayward Unified School District does not pay for employee health and welfare benefits.
Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. Health benefit costs are 100% employee paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Employees may opt out of health coverage upon presentation of proof of alternate coverage.
Dental coverage is mandatory for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more, regardless of outside coverage. Less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The District contributes the full premium for "employee only". Any additional premium will be employee paid.
