Job description
The Cook Assistant position is responsible for preparing and serving meals and assisting in the kitchen and/or dining room as assigned. Assures meals are presented and served to the residents within the standards of Customer Service. Assures dining room is always clean and presentable to the public The Cook Assistant supports the Food Services Director in the performance of the Dining Services program at the community. Maintain clean and sanitized dining service areas and assist in the receiving, rotation, and storage of products.
This position reports directly to the Food Service Director and/or Executive Director.

Expectations:
- Has a good knowledge of nutrition, recipes and special dietary needs, e.g. what to substitute for residents on special diets or what a bread exchange is.
- Demonstrates good emergency decision making e.g., food that was ordered for a meal and was never delivered.
- Demonstrates good basic knowledge and willingness to learn new techniques; asks questions or looks up references as needed.
- Properly operates all the equipment in the kitchen.
- Demonstrates good judgments and makes well thought out recommendations regarding inventory.
- Aware of events, activities and changes; efficiently organizes work area; checks menu and ensures food items are available before starting.
- Keeps up with the flow of work; knows which tasks can be delayed or skipped to meet important scheduled time and has contingency plans if waiting for something is necessary.
- Willing to help with special events, fill in for others to accommodate emergency situations.
- Assures that each person on a special diet is accommodated.
- Demonstrates a strong respect for facility property and supplies; takes action to protect equipment and eliminate waste.
- Maintains a cheerful and cooperative relationship with coworkers.
- Answers the phone cheerfully, gets complete information and responds pleasantly.
- Adheres to state food code, rules and regulations and sanitation procedures.
- Always cheerful with a hello and good morning for residents. Initiates friendly conversations with residents; shows concerns for their welfare.
- Listens carefully to residents’ feedback and concerns. Gives the resident a respectful response, and directs problem to the Food Services Director and Executive Director.
- Accommodates resident requests promptly, if appropriate, e.g. substitute for foods that cause heartburn, change of tablemates, etc.
- Smoothly integrates proper safety sanitation techniques as part of the work, e.g. washes hands, wears proper equipment for safety, uses cleaning products properly. Responsible for recording temperatures.

Education and Experience: High School education. Some experience preferred. Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence and documentation on each resident. Ability to effectively present information on one‐to‐one and small group situations to customers, residents and other employees of the organization.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability: Must be punctual, attendance satisfactory, provide proper notice of tardiness or absences. Must follow facility dress code; maintain good personal hygiene and grooming. Must be mature and emotionally stable; use a calm, kind of tone voice with residents, staff and family members. Must be able to prioritize and organize work efficiently to accomplish workload within time allotted. Must maintain a positive attitude. Must respond appropriately to safety hazards, fire drills and emergency situations. Must follow safety rules regulations. Reports injuries/accidents to supervisor immediately per facility procedures.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move supplies, equipment, and materials weighing approximately 35‐40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and depth perception, the ability to adjust focus. In a typical eight‐ hour day, employee will: Stand/walk up to six hours a day Frequently support up to 70 pounds Occasionally lift/carry up to1 5 pounds Frequently kneel, bend, and reach & secure proper assistance for transferring and lifting of residents as needed

Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
