HDR is looking for a Controls Designer to support our national Control Systems practice which includes full-service capabilities for clients in multiple industries and market sectors providing control system assessment, planning, design, automation programming/configuration, testing & commissioning, and maintenance.

The primary role of this position is to support the planning and design of automated process control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems in coordination with clients and multidiscipline teams to develop solutions for construction and implementation in multiple market sectors including tech, media & telecom; oil & gas; food & beverage, logistics, manufacturing; mining; industrial; transportation; and water/wastewater.

As a Controls Designer you will work under the direction of a Senior Control Systems Engineer to design complex process control and SCADA systems, assisting with the evaluation and selection of equipment and system components. They will be responsible for creating biddable and technically accurate construction documents including drawings and specifications. They must be self-motivated with an initiative to deliver high quality, technically excellent SCADA/I&C designs and produce design documents that align with industry standards and HDR CAD and BIM standards.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Controls Designer, we'll count on you to:

  • Customize drawings within AutoCAD using detailed knowledge of the programs.
  • Assist in the development of company CAD and BIM standards and evaluate new products and software.
  • Provide software support to all CAD and BIM users, and review CAD and BIM files for adherence to standards.
  • Ensure all drawings comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Maintain and communicate office and/or project CAD and BIM standards.
  • Encourage and motivate staff to use the CAD and BIM standards.
  • Travel to client facilities to participate in field activities to assess and document the current state of installed electrical and control systems.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
  • Participate in design review and planning meetings with the client.
  • Interface with Electrical and Process Engineers to fully coordinate design requirements for network, power, control, and instrumentation.
  • Assist with the selection and specification of process instrumentation, control panels, and network equipment.
  • Assist with the development of biddable and technically accurate SCADA / I&C construction documents including P&IDs, network architecture diagrams, control panel layouts and wiring diagrams, installation details, loop drawings, and technical specifications.

Qualifications


Required Qualifications

  • Associate or technical school degree, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 5+ years experience in technical support of CAD applications such as AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Must have engineering production experience.
  • Demonstrate a strong knowledge of industry standards and practices in the areas of CAD, more specifically AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Uses office productivity software effectively (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and be able to use Microsoft database technologies.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including ability to gather, organize and interpret data for process monitoring or business case development.
  • Apply sound judgment in establishing priorities among support requests and project work.
  • Display attention to detail and strong organization skills.
  • Experience with Bentley products such as ProjectWise is a significant plus
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
