About the role

We are looking for a Contracts & Procurement Manager to lead the contracts and project procurement team and manage the procurement activities for one of the largest capital projects currently being delivered within the Rio Tinto Group, the Oyu Tolgoi Underground Project. This role is a great opportunity to provide strategic direction by leading the contracting, project procurement and commercial functions for the Oyu Tolgoi Underground Project and to engage highest level stakeholders at GM/ Executive level.

Working on Monday to Friday as a residential or FIFO to Ulaanbaatar and reporting to the GM Project Services, you will be:

• Managing the owner’s procurement and contracts team for Oyu Tolgoi Underground Project;
• Overseeing the EPCM management of approximately $2 billion of capital spend as part of the overall project scope;
• Providing expert commercial support and advice to general managers, project managers and owner’s teams;
• Managing engagement with Oyu Tolgoi LLC Board sub-committees in relation to contracting and procurement on the Project;
• Accountable for strategic input into and implementation of Mongolian and South Gobi local procurement strategies;
• Managing the relationship with Rio Tinto Procurement and other corporate commercial functions (where required) on the owner’s team’s behalf;
• Managing the process for resolving escalated contractor claims and disputes (working with Rio Tinto Legal);
• Leading and developing the local talent within the contracts and procurement team;
• Ensuring systems, procedures and model documents meet both owner’s team and corporate requirements; and
• Ensuring best practice and sharing of knowledge by communicating and collaborating with the broader Rio Tinto contracts and project services teams.

What you will bring

• Degree qualification in Engineering or Business/ Commerce together with enriched years of contracts experience attained within a major mining and metals projects environment.
• Demonstrated previous success in a senior contracts team leadership role.
• Thorough understanding of contracts and commercial concepts as they apply to large value, complex capital projects.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

• Legal background, MBA or equivalent post graduate qualification.
• Direct exposure to procurement in a major capital projects environment.

Where you’ll be working

Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
