The Collections Technician will work as part of a team of two to carry out collection projects and preventive conservation measures. The primary goal of this position is to advance our planning for future collection storage by conducting an inventory of the objects in our current collection storage and maintaining these areas. The Collections Technician will report to the Collections Manager, with additional supervision by the Collections Care Specialist and Registrar.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, work well as part of a team, maintain a high attention to detail, be meticulous and organized, and be able to track their progress on various projects. This position is from 9 am – 5 pm with desired days as Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays (24 hours/week). The job period is for one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. This position will provide a good opportunity to gain hands-on experience for those looking to advance their career in the collections management or conservation fields.

  • Conduct an inventory and maintain collection storage areas.
  • Object labeling and documentation photography.
  • Condition checks of objects and spaces, maintaining a log of these checks.
  • Work with our collections database Re:Discovery Proficio to update object locations.
  • Rehouse objects in storage according to best practices.
  • Assist with Integrated Pest Management by monitoring, collecting data, and responding to pest activity.
  • Tracking climate data by using eClimate Notebook software and monitoring climate systems in storage areas.
  • Implement preventive conservation procedures.
  • Occasional specialized care of objects on display under the supervision of Conservation Staff.
  • Occasionally preparing objects for display in gallery spaces.
  • Assisting with collection emergency preparedness response efforts.
  • Follow prescribed safety and health rules, regulations, and practices.
  • Perform other related duties as required or directed.
Requirements:

The desirable candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • BA or BFA (MA preferred) in Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, Art History, Studio Art, History, or a related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiarity with Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint
  • Familiarity with working on an iPad and filling out survey forms
  • Experience with collection databases
  • Experience handling fine and decorative art
  • Knowledge of museum numbering systems
  • Experience with condition reporting and the corresponding nomenclature
  • Experience with object rehousing for storage
  • Experience with using a HEPA vacuum
  • Experience working with power and small hand tools
  • Basic photography skills
  • Basic sewing skills
  • Ability to carry up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work in small spaces or close to the ground
  • Ability to grip item with and without gloves
  • Comfortable ascending/descending ladders
  • Valid drivers license with clean driving record
