JOB DUTIES – It is expected that all duties and responsibilities of this position will be performed in a manner consistent with the mission and core values.

Technician II:

  • Accurately prepare medications for dispensing.
  • Proficiently operates pharmacy automation.
  • Ensures medications are delivered timely.
  • Responsible steward of resources through inventory management and elimination of waste.
  • Maintains appropriate storage of medications including rotation of inventory and management of expired items.
  • Complies with use of appropriate pharmaceutical waste streams.
  • Maintains cleanliness of department and medication storage areas.
  • Process returns timely.
  • Prioritizes workflow by patient impact.
  • Follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to medical ethics and has concern for the welfare of the patient, pharmacy and institution.
  • Willingly accepts other duties as assigned.

SUB SPECIALTY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: Within the Technician I or Technician II roles there are sub specialty areas of responsibility that require additional job duties.

Medication Reconciliation: In addition to either Technician I or Technician II job duties listed above:

  • Performs a variety of functions which impact the medication reconciliation process and patient care.
  • Prioritizes workflow by patient impact.
  • Collects or updates an accurate medication list of the patient’s home medication in anticipation of hospital admission from various resources (patient/caregiver interviews, medication bottles, physician offices, community pharmacies, historical encounters, extended care facilities, or other acute care facilities) to ensure a complete and accurate entry into the hospitals electronic health record for utilization by the provider responsible for admitting the patient.
  • Identifies when a discrepancy related to inappropriate dosing, frequency, or schedule for a home medication exists and uses this knowledge to obtain clarification to ensure accuracy of the home medication list.
  • Effectively communicate with other healthcare professionals to prioritize patient care and identify patient specific needs.
  • Communicates delays or difficulties in the reconciliation process to the appropriate disciplines.
  • Directs any unresolved issues to the admitting provider or supervising pharmacist in all cases of unresolved discrepancies related to a patient’s medication or allergy history.
  • Records the patient’s preferred outpatient pharmacy in the electronic medical record, or equivalent.
  • Obtains and records the patient’s allergy history in the electronic medical record, or equivalent, and clarifies and records the nature of the allergic reaction when applicable.
  • Provides excellent customer service skills for nursing, pharmacy, and medical staff to foster relationships that assure optimal patient care during home medication information collection.
  • Assists with appropriate storage of home medications.
  • Identifies quality and efficiency improvement opportunities while on the patient care areas and brings suggestions to pharmacy management.
  • Participates on department and interdisciplinary teams to resolve problems and improve processes.
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, may assist in drug distribution tasks to expedite medication delivery as needed.

Retail:

  • Accurately and efficiently processes and fills prescriptions for pharmacists verification
  • Processes and receives wholesaler order correctly
  • Assists pharmacists with obtaining and processing specialty products
  • Ensures positive customer relation interactions

Packager: In addition to either Technician I or Technician II job duties listed above:

  • Maintain adequate inventory of packaged product to ensure timely dispense and delivery.
  • Proficiently operates and maintains pharmacy automation for packaging.
  • Assists with purchasing in the absence of the buyer.

Automation and System Coordinator: In addition to either Technician I or Technician II job duties listed above:

  • Administrator for pharmacy automation including:
  • Connect RX
  • NarcVault
  • AcuDose
  • MedCarousel
  • PacMed
  • Bulk Packager
  • MediDose
  • Robot
  • Administrator for pharmacy systems including:
    • TempTrak
    • Simplifi797
    • Patient assistance reimbursement programs
  • Coordinate optimization of the automation equipment.
  • Train and access staff competency with pharmacy systems annually.
  • Assist technicians with workflow or assume additional responsibilities when needed.
  • Assist with purchasing in the absence of the buyer.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of department policies and procedures.

Buyer: In addition to either Technician I or Technician II job duties listed above:

  • Manage purchasing, returns, recalls, inventory turns, shelf location, par values, back orders, shortages, and discontinues.
  • Support purchasing that contributes to health system initiatives and fiscally responsible inventory turns.
  • Act as department expert for distributor purchasing software.
  • Anticipate, assess usage and quantity on hand against proposed release, and inform clinical coordinator, pharmacy manager and director of medication shortages.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and inter/intra department personnel.
  • Accurately process department charges, accommodation sales billing, and manage invoices.
  • Provide basic purchasing and inventory management training for employees and assess competency annually.
  • Assist automation coordinator with continual inventory evaluation.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of department policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITY –

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification through PTCB or ExCPT required
  • Registration with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy required within 30 days of hire.
  • 1 year hospital experience or 2 years retail experience preferred.
  • Attentive to detail.
  • Ability to efficiently organize and prioritize workflow for timely completion.
  • Comfortable performing basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Flexibility to adaptability to interruptions in workflow and continuous change.
  • Critical thinking skills to identify potential process failures and solve problems.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of hospital personnel.
  • Demonstrates customer service priority to anticipate and exceed expectations.
  • Trustworthy and accountable.
  • Engaged in continuous growth and development.
  • Adheres to medical ethics and has concern for the welfare of the patient, pharmacy and institution.
