Position Summary
The North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG) offers engaging, hands-on learning opportunities for children and families on a variety of natural science themes. From preschool classes to family workshops to our popular summer camp, we strive to connect children to the natural world, foster respect and appreciation for the environment, instill a sense of place and wonder, and cultivate a love for science-learning.
Camp Flytrap provides children a week of hands-on outdoor discovery and natural science learning on our beautiful campus – featuring native plant gardens, woodland trails, ponds, stream, and LEED-certified education center. Kids explore the wonders of North Carolina plant and animal life, habitats, and ecology through nature hikes, stories, games, arts/crafts, and more. Camps are organized by age (4-5, 6-7, and 8-10) and offer a balance of indoor learning and outdoor exploration taught by experienced environmental educators and supported by trained teen volunteer counselors-in-training. Camp Environmental Educators work as a team under the supervision of the Youth Education Manager to prepare for and teach hands-on natural science camps for children. Educators are responsible for safely leading a group of ten to fifteen campers through indoor and outdoor educational activities while monitoring the group’s needs and adapting plans to help all children successfully engage in the camp experience. Educators also support camp-related administrative duties and the maintenance our outdoor and indoor learning spaces. Successful candidates are energetic and engaging, have strong leadership skills, and demonstrated experience teaching nature and science themes to children outdoors.
Primary Duties:
- Prepare for and teach high-quality natural science camps for children ages 4-10 from established lesson plans. There is flexibility and opportunity to bring your own unique skill set and teaching experience to program delivery. Hands-on activities include outdoor exploration in our native plant gardens and nature trails, citizen science, stories, games, and arts/crafts.
- Supervise camper safety and group management while providing a fun and nurturing environment
- Prepare and maintain camp paperwork, program supplies, and classroom
- Supervise and mentor teen volunteer counselors-in-training (CIT)
- Interact professionally and maintain excellent rapport with staff, campers, parents/guardians, and teen volunteers
- Assist with upkeep of outdoor learning spaces (nature play space, bird feeders, etc.) and children’s discovery room
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

- Demonstrated ability working in a non-formal education setting (e.g. botanic gardens, nature centers, science museums, parks) leading small or large groups in outdoor learning
- Ability to communicate enthusiasm for natural science
- Working knowledge of interpretive/environmental education best practices
- Experience and passion for sharing nature with young children (ages 4-7)
- Working knowledge of North Carolina flora and fauna
- Competent and comfortable leadership and teaching styles
- Ability to be a team leader and a team player
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Self-motivated, energetic, flexible, adaptable
- Dedicated to exceptional customer service
- Proficient computer skills
- Submit to a criminal background check prior to employment
- A valid NC driver’s license and eligibility to drive a State vehicle is required
- CPR with AED and First Aid certification (provided upon employment)
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, education, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience
- Prior experience teaching nature-based programs/camps
- Experience overseeing volunteers
- Ability to speak Spanish preferred but not required
- Relevant certifications such as NC Environmental Educator, Certified Interpretive Guide, etc. highly encouraged but not required
- Additional professional or lived experience that demonstrates added capacity to fulfill the position’s responsibilities
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
- Ability to safely lift/move/maneuver up to 40 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to move swiftly around the building and grounds, comfortably walk up to 2 miles, and traverse uneven terrain.
