Title: BIPOC Focused Staff Therapist
Position Purpose:
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is hiring a BIPOC Focused Staff Therapist to join our Clinical Team supporting student mental health through individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, referrals and wellness programming. The ideal candidate will have personal lived experience and strong skills working with BIPOC individuals and groups across intersecting identities utilizing a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The CAPS Clinical Team is highly experienced and offers a great opportunity for someone looking to expand their clinical knowledge and skills in a structured and supportive setting. The Staff Therapist will connect and collaborate with other staff and departments on campus who work with students from historically under-represented identities to develop training and programming that supports students through social connection and skills building. CAPS clinicians are committed to issues pertaining to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice and to our own learning and accountability as individuals and as a team. Job Duties:
Clinical Work
- Builds an active clinical caseload overtime, providing individual and group counseling and psychotherapy to a diverse population of students.
- Provides Walk-In and Same Day appointments
- Conducts intake assessments
- Offers short-term individual and group therapy
- Conducts case management for students needing community referrals
- Completes clinical documentation in timely fashion and ensures that all documentation meets established standards.
- Consults to the On Call Service during high risk and critical situations, i.e. hospital transports, in which the On Call Service requires professional consultation and liaising with the local hospital, as needed, following Maine mental health laws.
- Consults with students, staff and faculty regarding mental health concerns
- Provides crisis and ongoing counseling services for students with acute psychological concerns based on experience and skill level.
- Participates in all administrative, clinical and case conference meetings
- Seeks continued growth through professional development
Outreach and Education
- Supports CAPS goals and programming
- Collaborates with campus partners on wellness programming
- Collaborate with student clubs, affinity groups, and organizations on campus regarding programming efforts that support personal growth and resilience building.
- In collaboration with the CAPS Team and campus partners, develop and implement BIPOC focused educational outreach and wellness programming to students.
Community Partnerships
- Develops relationships with Office of Intercultural Education
- Designs programming to support BIPOC students
Other
- Assure equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism as central to their work and the delivery of services to students and colleagues.
- Completes other duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee that are consistent with the responsibilities of the position.
- Attends training and professional development opportunities for continuing education credits (CEU) to maintain Maine licensure in good standing.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Master’s or doctoral degree in Social Work or Clinical or Counseling Psychology required.
- Must possess valid licensure or be license eligible in current state, with ability to obtain licensure in Maine within 90 days. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining licensure.
- Recent graduates from master's or doctoral programs working towards independent licensure will be given due consideration given their ability to practice under the supervision of a senior staff clinician.
Experience
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in supporting students from historically marginalized groups, including, but not limited to, students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation-to-college students, LGBTQ+ students, international students, and low-income students.
- Strong clinical, diagnostic, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.

- Practice in accordance with the center's policies following the ethical guidelines or mental health practice, HIPAA, and medical care.

- Strong interpersonal skills to develop collegial relationships and is flexible, collaborative and positive.
- Establish authentic rapport with students, while maintaining appropriate clinical and professional boundaries.
- Excellent communication (written, verbal and presentation) skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic computer applications (e.g., Work, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, on-call and other non-traditional schedules.
