Under general supervision, to install, inspect, calibrate, repair, and perform preventative maintenance, electrical safety inspections, and modifications and minor repairs on electronic, diagnostic, and therapeutic biomedical equipment.

Typical Tasks

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Assembles beds, patient transport equipment, and other equipment;

  • May inspect and/or repair radiological and micro-processor medical laboratory equipment;

  • May represent the Biomedical Technical unit on interdepartmental committees;

  • Performs preventative maintenance and electrical safety inspections;

  • Makes routine electronic, electrical, and mechanical repairs, modifications, and calibrations on all types of electronic and biomedical equipment, including electrical and mechanical hospital beds, ECG, respiration monitors, IV pumps, ventilators, infant incubators, patient monitoring systems, non-invasive blood pressure units, and other electronic equipment, such as patient surveillance, patient communications, and code blue system;

  • Initiates purchase requests for repair parts and accessories;

  • Receives parts and accessories and maintains repair parts inventory;

  • Maintains accurate maintenance history records;

  • Makes recommendations on the purchase and disposition of medical equipment;

  • Assists in training nurses, therapists, and doctors on subjects such as electrical safety and proper use of computerized medical equipment;

  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;

  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:


Training and Experience Note:
The required knowledge and abilities are attained through two (2) years of experience performing minor repairs on electronic, diagnostic, and therapeutic biomedical equipment similar in scope and function to an Associate Biomedical Equipment Technician with the County of Santa Clara.


Special Requirements

  • Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician issued by the International Certification Commission (ICC) is desirable.

  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.


Knowledge of:

  • Specialized test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, analog and digital multimeters, frequency generators and counters, and special instrumentation designed for testing electronic and biomedical equipment;

  • Low voltage power and relays;

  • Joint Commission, Title 22, and FDA requirements relating to hospital equipment licensing and patient care;

  • Electrical and electronic theory, including discreet components, integrated circuits, micro-processors, and medical equipment;

  • Hazards and applicable safety standards and performance requirements related to electronic and biomedical instrumentation;

  • Calibration, adjustments, and proper grounding of electronic equipment;

  • Advanced databases and software languages;

  • Advanced concepts of computer systems and networking;

  • Pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanical, and general hospital procedures as they relate to electronic and biomedical equipment.


Ability to:

  • Interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, operational specifications, and illustrative drawings;

  • Analyze and correct malfunctions in complicated electronic and biomedical instrumentation;

  • Keep accurate maintenance and inventory records;

  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing;

  • Establish effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.
