The primary responsibility of the Bartender is to have the bar properly set up to serve residents and guests during service hours. The bartender is to assist the Dining Services Director (DSD) with menu pricing of drinks, preparation (recipes) for drinks, special events, beverage delivery, food delivery, inventory and sanitation in accordance with appropriate industry and health department regulations and standards. The Bartender’s interactions with residents, family members and guests in a professional manner are key to maintaining a positive physical and social environment for the residents, family members and guests.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Responsible for the accounting and recording of all beverage sales.
- Responsible for stock takes.
- Ensure that the bar is stocked and prepared to meet daily business demands.
- When space allows, display bottles in speed rack in the following order from left to right: Scotch, Bourbon, Blend, Gin, Rum, Vodka, Tequila, Triple Sec, Dry Vermouth, Sweet Vermouth, Roses Lime Juice, Mai Tai, Grenadine.
- Check all juices and mixes to be sure nothing is spoiled. A small portion of the non-alcoholic mix or juice should be sampled to ensure that nothing tastes acidic or smells foul.
- Keep the entire bar area cleaned and sanitized.
- Set up the bar counter with menus, napkins, straws, & stirrers.
- Greet guests by name, with a smile and in a friendly manner, and the appropriate “Good Morning”, “Good Afternoon”, or “Good Evening” Sir or Madam.
- Ladies’ orders are to be taken and served first.
- Ensure that the correct order is taken; if in doubt, ask again or repeat the order.
- Remember what guests drink in order to ensure guest satisfaction.
- Serve non-alcoholic beverages and water in the same courteous manner as when serving alcoholic beverages.
- Do not hesitate to ask for identification (proof of age) when in doubt that a guest is not of drinking age.
- Always place napkins in front of the guest before serving beverage.
- Fill orders using a shot glass for measurement.
- Serve all drinks in the appropriate glass and properly garnished (see cocktail listing).
- If a guest orders a specific brand, he/she must be served that brand. If we do not carry a brand requested an alternate brand is to be suggested.
- Avoid glass breakage near ice. If a glass does break near ice, the ice bin must be completely emptied, flushed out thoroughly, re-sanitized and refilled.
- Offer snacks during cocktail hours and keep snacks replenished. (See “Safe Staff Food Handlers” for proper food handling procedures and sanitation.)
- Responsible for the bar when the Dining Services Director is not present.
- Appropriately handle spills on guests and report the incident to management.
- Charge the appropriate amount for each drink served. Ensure that the check is correct before presenting it.
- Deliver all lost and found items to the Reception Desk immediately.
- Mix drinks, cocktails, and bar beverages as ordered and in compliance with company standards.
- Responsible for properly filling orders placed by bar waiters and cocktail waitresses and doing so in a prompt and efficient manner.
- Responsible for serving food and cleaning tables during service.
- Maintain professional standards of personal appearance and grooming which includes wearing proper attire and name tag when on duty.
- Attend and participate in all meetings and training as required by Company policy and the DSD.
- Be watchful of signs that residents are not able to function independently or a change in resident’s behavior. Report all signs to the DSD and/or Executive Director following the Company policies and procedures.
- Report any and all deferred maintenance, vandalism or hazardous situations to the DSD as discovered and take appropriate action as necessary.
- Ensure understanding of and compliance with all regulations regarding residents’ rights.
- Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent resident, associate, Community or Company information deemed as such.
- Other duties as assigned.
Special Requirements/ Certifications:
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Technical school or culinary school degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years hands-on bartending including some proven management experience.
- Ability to analyze and interpret documents such as recipes and manuals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Must be flexible and able to multitask and possess a high level of energy/enthusiasm.
- Must attend to detail, have safety awareness and be a team player as well as have good verbal and listening skills.
- Must have a means of transportation.
- Must meet all state health requirements.
- Must present proof of Hepatitis A vaccination where required.
- Must have food handler certification or be willing to obtain.
- Must have working knowledge of appropriate Microsoft Office programs and POS programs.
- Must have a positive Criminal Background Screening.
- Must pass a physical having no signs or symptoms of a communicable disease including tuberculosis where required. Freedom from tuberculosis must be documented on an annual basis where required.
