The opportunity:
Sun Life U.S. is seeking an AVP & Senior Counsel to join its dynamic legal team and serve as the primary counsel for our Health and Risk Solutions business, the leading direct provider of stop loss insurance in the United States. A key member of the Health and Risk Solutions extended leadership team, this role will help the business navigate through a range of issues, from product design and development, business development, contract review, underwriting, policy administration, and claims.
How you will contribute:
Provide advice and counsel on new business, underwriting, marketing and claims issues
Assist with product development. Draft all policy and amendment terms and work with the state filing team on filings and related regulatory issues
Assist with policy sale and RFP issues. Participate in calls with brokers and potential policyholders as needed
Serve as a member of the Health and Risk Solutions extended leadership team
Draft and review service provider and broker related contracts
Review nondisclosure agreements
Participate in business unit strategic initiatives
What you will bring with you:
J.D. degree with admission to the practice of law in a United States jurisdiction
Preference for familiarity with Stop Loss insurance, employer self-funded benefit plans, ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, MEWAs, and Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021/No Surprises Act
Strong analytical, legal research and drafting skills
Able to handle multiple and changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Strong computer skills, proficient in a PC environment with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Westlaw or NILS, and Internet as a research tool
Superior communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
Critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills
Strong self-motivation and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team
Ability to initiate and prioritize regular work duties and projects; must be detailed oriented, organized, and effectively manage time
Minimal travel required to attend industry meetings and other meetings as needed (Less than 5% of time)

Southern region: $195,300 - $293,000 annually
Central region: $195,300 - $293,000 annually
Northern region: $195,300 - $293,000 annually
If you are a Colorado resident, the salary range for this position is $195,300 - $293,000 annually.
If you are a New York resident, the salary range for this position is $195,300 - $293,000 annually.
If you are Washington resident, the salary range for this position is $195,300 - $293,000 annually.
