Assistant Director, Next Generation Philanthropy (Student Engagement Center)
Job description
The University of Virginia Office of Engagement seeks an Assistant Director, Next Generation Philanthropy, to join the University Annual Giving team under the Associate Director, Next Generation Philanthropy. The Assistant Director will manage Cavalier Connect, the university’s student engagement center, through which 50+ student fundraisers use an omnichannel (e-mail, phone, social, text, video) strategy to engage alumni, friends, and families philanthropically through giving, stewardship, and education.
The Assistant Director will build on existing infrastructure to develop, execute, and communicate Cavalier Connect’s fundraising and engagement strategy. This will entail using data to assess progress and identify future areas of opportunity. The incumbent will also manage a large, talented student team and coach student leaders to meet goals and grow professionally.
This role follows nontraditional work hours— typically Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.— and requires daily in-person work at the office with remote flexibility when students are not present (e.g., mornings, academic breaks, etc.).
Responsibilities:
FUNDRAISING STRATEGY, EXECUTION, & COMMUNICATION (45%):
· Benchmark with UVA peers and peer institutions to stay abreast on student engagement center and fundraising best practices;
· Analyze existing and/or new data reports to identify strengths and areas of opportunity, and to request needed prospect pool data from Analytics team;
· Develop, guide, demonstrate, and sustain effective student engagement and fundraising strategies to raise dollars and drive undergraduate alumni participation;
· Regularly update Cavalier Connect employees, partners, and leadership on progress towards goals (e.g., donors, dollars, and engagement touchpoints);
· Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of Cavalier Connect software and hardware, working with internal partners and external vendors to ensure the system's proper functioning and timely updates
· Periodically will present to the Office of Engagement Team, University Advancement, and / or others on Cavalier Connect and its activities
STUDENT MANAGEMENT AND COACHING (45%):
· Recruit and hire Next Generation Philanthropy student employees in accordance with Human Resources policies and procedures;
· Oversee training that establishes clear expectations of student employees, University Advancement values, and skill proficiency needed to engage, solicit, and steward constituents;
· Create ongoing learning opportunities for fundraisers to build knowledge about current events at UVA and best practices in fundraising and alumni engagement;
· Optimize student-executed engagement monitoring system to establish a more robust quality control and coaching protocol;
· Cultivate a high-energy, learning- and performance-driven environment for students employees to develop and thrive
MISCELLANEOUS (10%):
· Support Associate Director for Next Generation Philanthropy on miscellaneous projects related to the philanthropic education and engagement of undergraduate students and recent graduates;
· Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree with at least one year of experience (which may include full-time employment, or any of the following: internships, externships, shadowing, volunteering with non-profit organizations, community organizations, employment as a student worker, cooperative education, field study, undergraduate research, part-time or summer jobs, leadership, and involvement in student groups in which skills that are relevant to the work of the position are developed);
· Availability to work during our nontraditional hours and in-person daily;
· Excellent interpersonal / communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
· Two or more years of experience (which may include full-time employment, or any of the following: internships, externships, shadowing, volunteering with non-profit organizations, community organizations, employment as a student worker, cooperative education, field study, undergraduate research, part-time or summer jobs, leadership, and involvement in student groups in which skills that are relevant to the work of the position are developed);
· Previous experience managing and/or mentoring college students;
· Entrepreneurial spirit with demonstrated success in project management;
· Knowledge of the principles of advancement/philanthropy, higher education, and relationship management;
· Working knowledge of database management (e.g., Advance, Salesforce, EverTrue) and/or engagement software (e.g., VanillaSoft, Hustle);
· Ability to use data to make data-informed plans or strategies.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $58,000-$63,000, commensurate with experience.

Because of the close working relationship with UVA students who work in the University Advancement office, the Assistant Director is also required to work primarily in the shared office space located in Charlottesville, Virginia.
