Armed Security Officer for the USDA

Objective

This position is responsible for the protection, safeguarding, and security of assets, personnel, customers, and all visitors.

Essential functions

Be able to read and understand the English language to effectively carry out applied printed rules, detailed orders, instructions, and training materials. Have a command of both the written and spoken English language to properly and clearly communicate in person or via electronic devices (telephone and radio) with co-workers and the general public.The ability to maintain a professional, tactful and courteous demeanor under stressful situations security personnel routinely encounter. Be able to compose in the English language precise short paragraphs, written reports, and other reports as necessary.

Job Duties

• Protecting classified materials against espionage and unauthorized disclosure.
• Safeguard the activity against sabotage or any other incident, which might jeopardize the normal operations of NPGQC, such as theft, robbery, riot, lawlessness, demonstrations, etc.

• Provide necessary first-aid treatment and immediately obtain professional assistance in the event of injury or illness to Government employees or others while in the building or on the grounds.

• Security personnel shall not use, or permit the use of any area within NPGQC for unlawful purposes.

• Security personnel shall inform the supervisor of all security violations that will affect the operation of the NPGQC.

• Security personnel shall review new orders or assignments upon reporting for duty.
• Observe and patrol designated perimeter areas, structures and activities of security interests.
• Restrain persons attempting or gaining unauthorized entrance.
• Check security status of all rooms and buildings during secure hours.
• Respond to alarm signals and other indications of suspicious activity.
• Notify appropriate personnel in case of leaks, power failures, or any unusual occurrences within the building.
• Prevent theft, pilferage, espionage, sabotage and other criminal acts.
• Evacuate personnel during emergencies and catastrophes.
• Protect all persons and property in view or hearing.
• Keep constantly alert and observe everything within sight or hearing.

• Report all violations of published and/or verbal orders.

• Remain on assignment until properly relieved by direction of the Site/Shift Supervisor.
• Pass all information relative to assignments to the relieving guard.
• Sound the alarm and take action when warranted in the event of fire, disorder, or any other emergency.

• Keep the supervisor advised of changes and conditions within and surrounding their assigned area.

Qualifications

• U.S. Citizen
• Must possess a high school education or equivalency (GED)
• Proficient in English
• At least 21 years of age
• 1 year of armed security experience or law enforcement OR 2 years of military service (active duty or reserve) with and honorable discharge
• Must have Maryland Gun permit, Guard card, MEB, First aid-CPR-AED card.
• Must be fully capable of performing duties requiring moderate to arduous physical exertion and must be fully capable of self-defense, tactical exercises and weaponless defense.
• Must be able to write reports in a legible, clear, concise, and complete manner
• Shall be proficient with Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) in order to draft reports, prepare presentations, etc.
