Phoenix College (PC), the first public junior college in Arizona, welcomed its first students on September 13, 1920. In 1962, PC transitioned to a community college that is part of the Maricopa Community College District. Currently, PC serves an ethnically-diverse student population and is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with over 17,000 students; PC proudly champions for social justice, equity, and access. The majority of our students are part-time, first-generation students seeking career technical education or university transfer.

Phoenix College has an amazing opportunity for an anthropology faculty member to provide instruction in anthropology courses to a diverse student population while working within Phoenix College’s learning college environment. Engages students and motivates student success while teaching classes in a variety of modalities using a variety of instruction and assessment methods and technologies.Provides discipline-related leadership in the area of anthropology, with curriculum development and adjunct instructor coordination, evaluation, and mentorship.

Position starts August 2023.

• Teaches a variety of undergraduate anthropology courses to a diverse student population including creating and distributing course syllabi satisfying District content requirements; creates and delivers meaningful learning activities designed to help students successfully master course content; attends all scheduled class meetings; maintains academic support hours to help and advise students; assesses student performance on learning activities and provides timely feedback to support learning; submits final letter grades by stated College due dates
• Provides course leadership in anthropology areas develops, revises, and maintains anthropology course curriculum; works with the department chair to schedule anthropology course offerings; coordinates, evaluates, and mentors adjunct instructors in anthropology
• Engages in college academic life; participates in departmental and campus activities; supports and engages with faculty colleagues, attends department meetings; participates in campus activities and serves on one or more College committees

A Master's Degree or higher in one of the following fields: Anthropology, Applied Anthropology, Archaeology, Social Cultural Anthropology, Forensic Anthropology, Physical Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, Classics, Classical Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology, Egyptology, Maritime Archaeology

OR

A Master’s Degree in any field with 18 graduate-level credits in these prefixes/subjects: Anthropology, History, Sociology, Biology

OR

A Master’s Degree in any field with 18 graduate-level credits in courses with these keywords: Global, Ancient, Prehistoric, Precontact, Culture, Precolumbian, Biology, Evolutionary, Anatomy, Religion, History, Women, Gender, Queer, Indigenous, Ethnography, Ethnographic, New World, Old World, Near East, Africa, African, Mythology

EDU 250 Teaching and Learning in the Community College or equivalent must be completed within two years of date of hire.

1. Doctoral degree in anthropology from an accredited college or university

2. Experience teaching anthropology courses (3 or more instructional credits each) in a primary instructor role (not teaching assistant) at the college level

3. Experience teaching college-level anthropology courses to high school students in a dual-enrollment or a concurrent enrollment college prep program

4. Experience teaching a variety of different anthropology courses (as primary instructor) at the college level

5. Experience teaching in a variety of modalities: in-person, hybrid, fully online synchronous, and fully online asynchronous

6. Experience developing, revising, and maintaining anthropology course curriculum

7. Experience supervising and mentoring students’ independent study project8. Field work experience within the discipline of anthropology

9. Teaching experience within field projects related to the discipline of anthropology

10. Experience obtaining grants or fellowships in support of teaching and/or anthropology fieldwork projects

• May be required to teach in-person on campus, online, or in a hybrid format.
• May be required to teach evenings or weekends.
• May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
