Job Summary:

The Standard seeks a talented pricing / modeling actuary (FSA or near FSA) to join our Individual Annuities group. The candidate will be a key part of the team that is responsible for pricing, rate setting, product development support, and investment and ALM strategy support for the Individual Annuities division. The role can expand or contract depending on the level of the candidate, with opportunities for additional exposure to management, sales team, financial planning process, competitor analysis, corporate modeling, and / or financial reporting, etc.

We seek a talented individual who is dedicated, motivated, curious, and wants to grow within the organization. The ideal candidate should have strong communication skills, business acumen, AXIS modeling experience, and exposure to asset-liability modeling.

Depending on scope of the role, your key responsibilities could include:

  • Recommend new money and renewal rates for The Standard’s individual annuity products. Be a spokesperson for the department’s rate-setting decisions, working inside and outside of the Individual Annuities division.
  • Analyze new and existing product profitability and make strategic recommendations to optimize income and achieve growth goals.
  • Work with investments team and corporate actuaries in order to ensure ALM strategy is appropriate for strategic goals.
  • Support product development process via prioritization of new ideas, risk and financial analysis, contract and regulatory filings, pricing, application of accounting standards, implementation of operations and management reporting, as well as product roll-out and sales support.
  • Maintain, improve, and analyze results of existing AXIS pricing models.
  • Assist operational and implementation capabilities as product development process evolves.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), or Associate of The Society of Actuaries (ASA) and close to obtaining FSA designation.
  • Annuities experience. Pricing experience a plus.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Advanced to Expert Excel skills.
  • Prior modeling experience. GGY Axis experience strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible actuarial experience.

Competencies You Possess (these may change if the level of the role expands or contracts):

Education/Experience:

  • This position is the highest level of the Actuarial Candidate career path prior to promotion into a position with senior Fellowship responsibility.
  • Prior responsible experience sufficient to have gained a seasoned actuarial business perspective required. ASA designation required.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in mathematics, actuarial science, business or a related field preferred.

  • Very familiar with internal and external statistical trends, factors, issues, and data impacting underwriting results and business strategies.
  • Leverages this knowledge and insight, combined with advanced and creative actuarial methods, to identify risks and opportunities, derive innovative solutions, and drive strategic business actions.

  • Determines methods and procedures on new assignments with limited guidance.
  • Provides guidance and acts as a resource/mentor to others in the actuarial career.

  • May serve as a lead on cross department/division project teams to manage, plan, implement and/or sponsor large complex actuarial studies, pricing strategies and policies.

  • Due to very advanced and sophisticated actuarial conceptual ability and highly relevant business know-how, the position works closely with Product Management and other functions within the company to achieve profitability and growth goals, and/or to provide actuarial analyses, responses, and communications for various audiences inside and outside the company.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert having frequent interaction with senior division management or other senior actuarial personnel.
  • Exhibits effective communication skills with non-technical audience. May direct and train lower-level students but is not an administrative supervisor.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.


  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

$102,250.00 - $150,000.00
