Job DescriptionMISSION
University Preparatory Academy seeks a professional and academic school counselor to join the UPA team to support students with first rate academic counseling and guidance in their quest to attend and succeed in the nation’s best colleges and universities.

Our academic counselors join top-notch instructors, coaches, mental health counselors, and staff to provide the best education, guidance, and support for all students throughout the UPA experience, up to, and beyond, the college application process.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Work collegially with the faculty and staff to support the school’s vision, mission, and philosophy and to assist UPA in meeting its planning goals.
  • Always ensure that the school’s counseling team provides a safe, supportive growth and learning environment for students, teachers, and all other members of the UPA community.
  • Help promote a culture where diversity is encouraged and where students respect opinions of others, take responsibility for their actions, exercise leadership, and strive for academic excellence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support and guide students in the completion of grade-specific benchmarks to build their resume and applications for universities and colleges.
  • Build rapport with students and cheer them on as they strive for their personal best.
  • Advise students as they acquire important skills such as study strategies, time management, organization, accountability, resourcefulness essential to becoming proactive, responsible learners.
  • Partner with parents/guardians and teachers to best support student wellbeing and academic success.
  • Coordinate and convene appropriate parent-teacher-student communications and meetings.
  • Review and monitor academic progress of students to ensure they are on track for promotion and graduation.
  • Advocate for students in schoolwide and relevant administrative decisions and events.
  • Advise students in A-G class requirements.
  • Advise students in additional college course classes as applicable
  • Be available for parent-teacher conferences as needed.
  • Attend all relevant meetings including planning meetings.
  • Ensure appropriate behavior of students around the school.
  • Undertake other duties assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Participate in trans-disciplinary team meetings, parent conferences, and faculty meetings, as scheduled
  • Communicate with parents frequently regarding student progress and educational needs

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential.
  • Bachelor’s (BA) degree followed by a graduate degree specializing in school counseling.
  • Proven working experience in school counseling
  • Experience with advocacy skills
  • Ability to collect and analyze data
  • Demonstrates computer literacy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Well-organized and committed
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Effective collaboration/problem-solving ability
  • Practices continuous professional education and improvement
  • Demonstrates job-specific skills required to meet essential job functions

  • Utilizes working knowledge of various counseling models, practices, and resources

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to reach materials. Ability to lift 25 pounds.
