Position Highlights
This position reports to the Senior Associate Director of The A Center, a unit within the Office of the Provost, Undergraduate Education. The Academic Advisor II provides academic advising and programming assistance in areas such as major exploration, academic probation services, and student retention. This individual will provide instruction for success and major exploration courses. The Academic Advisor II will support the recruitment, retention and engagement of students in The A Center. This position will serve as the front-line contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. Plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention. Builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors. Academic advisors have authority to approve students’ academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective faculty.

The A Center supports undecided/undeclared students, as well as Pre-Health professions and Pre-Law student services. In addition, this position assists in hosting and participating in special events such as the annual Meet Your Major, Pre-Health and Pre-Law Expos.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide developmental advising, support for major exploration advising, and programs to meet the specific needs of the following student populations: first-year and continuing undergraduate students who are undecided (No Major Selected), pre-majors, students seeking alternative majors; students who have been academically excluded from competitive majors; and/or students who are on academic warning/probation or who have been academically ineligible from the University.
  • Provide supplemental program planning and support for The A Center.
  • Represents unit on university committees to initiate change and to resolve issues related to academic issues as a subject expert.
  • Works with A Center Peer Mentor program – a group of student volunteers who help the department with retention initiatives.
  • Works with Assistant Director on Success Path, a program designed to help students get back to academic eligible.
  • Teach courses and facilitate related workshops and presentations.
  • Collaborates with senior advisors on SERP 197P major exploration course.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated effective communication with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and presentation skills and proactive, open, and responsive interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with university personnel: faculty, college deans, administrators, and staff, as well as representatives from business and from the community.
  • Skill in working with diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of student development theory.
  • Knowledge of advising practices and principles.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and perform duties autonomously.
  • Ability to work evening and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with multiple departments, organizations, and individuals in a complex environment.
  • Proficiency with University of Arizona Student Information System (UAccess).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Excel).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with post-secondary students.
  • Two or more years of demonstrated and successful experience in teaching freshman level courses at a two-year college or four-year undergraduate college/university.
