Patient Transportation Specialist

Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine, in the role of Patient Transportation Specialist.


In this role, you will perform duties related to the transportation of patients, charts, specimens, clinical equipment, etc. between various areas of the Medical Center. You will report directly to the Manager of Patient Transportation Services and you will accept assignments, schedule changes and other instructions from the Transportation Services Dispatcher.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires proper body mechanics to provide minimal assistance to patients during transfers to/from transport equipment causing injury to self or patient. Body mechanics and assistance with transfers will be learned in 1 week of on-the-job-training.
  • Requires the ability to properly use various pieces of equipment used in transportation operations (i.e. wheelchair, stretcher, IV poles, etc). Will be learned in 1 week of on-the-job-training.
  • Requires the ability to locate patient care areas, various therapeutic services departments, and various diagnostic and testing departments. Will be learned in 1 week of on-the-job-training.
  • Requires the knowledge to conduct tasks according to departmental standards for timeliness, safety, and communications.
  • Requires the ability to properly use the telephone and pager system to communicate with the Coordinators regarding work status. Training will be provided on the job.
  • Requires the ability to handle customer contacts with tact and courtesy.
  • Requires knowledge of emergency procedures; training will be provided.
