Director of Debate/Visiting Assistant Professor. The Bates College Department of Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies invites applications for a two-year position as Director of Debate/Visiting Assistant Professor to begin August 2023. The successful applicant will integrate the existing debate program into the department’s curriculum and imagine innovative classes that will engage issues of performance and citizenship. We seek a candidate with experience teaching performance-oriented courses; familiarity with Parliamentary and Lincoln-Douglas debate; a record of research and teaching excellence; and a history of administering extracurricular organizations successfully. Responsibilities include: teaching four performance courses per academic year and contributing to community engaged curriculum that investigate issues of power, particularly through the intersectional lenses of gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, or other identity categories; and administering the debate program, including meeting weekly with the student-governed Parliamentary debate team. Bates’ storied Brooks Quimby Debate Council is a unique program that emphasizes international debate as well as intercollegiate competition and public debate. Candidates with an interest in or experience with community-engaged learning are especially encouraged to apply as are candidates with demonstrated success in working with indigenous, historically underrepresented, first generation to college and other marginalized and vulnerable populations. ABD or Ph.D. in rhetoric, speech, communication, or a related field required. Competitive salary, plus benefits.
