JOB DESCRIPTION:

• Under general supervision, assists the veterinarians and researchers in surgery and radiology, animal care, treatments, and diagnostic and preventative procedures.
• Maintains medical records and inventory.
• Provides non-surgical technical assistance to researchers as directed.
• Provides input for protocol design and standard operating procedure development.
• Serves as a technical resource for other research personnel. Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
• Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve the quality of study results. Trains research staff in specialized procedures.
• Recommends new equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures. Provides input into the development of departmental goals and objectives.
• May assist in grant and other funding application preparation.
• Review literature for related research developments and techniques.
• Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
• Performs related responsibilities as required.
• Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
• Performs specialized research procedures on animals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• Three years of experience as a veterinary technician OR a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience as an animal care technician OR graduation from a two year veterinary technician program and one year of veterinary technician experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Four years of experience as a veterinary technician/assistant OR graduation from a two-year veterinary technician program and two years of veterinary technician experience.
• Laboratory animal medicine experience preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
• Anesthesia experience strongly preferred.
• Swine or large animal experience a plus.
• Certification at ALAT level preferred.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
