Description

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform a wide range of routine to moderately complex labor intensive work in the maintenance and repair of City water, wastewater collection, and distribution facilities. Employees in this classification function at entry level, and are accountable for maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the assigned lift stations and various facilities. Routine tasks are performed with some independence, and more difficult work is performed under direct supervision.

Examples of Duties

Because it is difficult if not impossible to present a finite list of every possible function to be performed by employee, the City of Wilton Manors reserves the right in its sole and absolute discretion to modify and update this job description and to ask employee to perform tasks beyond the duties presented herein. In the event a change is necessary to update the essential functions of the job, the City will provide as much notice as practicable to the employee.


  • Cleans, inspects and maintains lift stations, water and wastewater facilities and equipment, e.g., removes grease; lubricates motors and equipment, replaces packing in pumps and valves, replaces wiring and bearings in motors and pumps.
  • Installs and repairs wheel valves, checkvalves, mechanical valves, pumps.; repairs, replaces and unclogs sanitary sewer laterals and main lines.
  • Operates gas saws, pumps, generators, and hand tools for repair and maintenance of water and sewer system.
  • Operates Vac Con and backhoe for removal of earth for water and sewer breaks and repairs.
  • Identifies existing or potential facilities or equipment failure, and reports problems to supervisor.
  • Performs routine repairs and construction projects to water and wastewater collection, and distribution facilities and equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces water service lines, and water mains; installs new facility equipment, e.g., water service lines, tapping valves, meters.
  • Performs various custodial and maintenance duties in and around wastewater facilities, e.g., litter collecting, mowing, tree trimming, fertilizing, placing sod, raking, planting.
  • Reads and records water meters.
  • Uses electric meters to measure voltage and amps for pumps, starters, contacts and relays.
  • Operates compactors and roller for road restoration and repair.
  • Assists with minor repairs and installation projects of street, sewer, storm, water, irrigation and signage; performs repairs to roads; installs and repairs sidewalks.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of training and experience which would provide required knowledge, skills, and abilities are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

High school diploma or GED, vocational training and certification in electric and pump repair; supplemented by one (1) year experience in the semi-skilled labor of Utilities maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain all certifications and licenses necessary for the assigned area of work.

Preferred Qualifications
Three (3) or more years of experience in the semi-skilled labor of utilities maintenance and repair. Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to frequently squat or kneel on hard and/or uneven surfaces
  • Ability to withstand, with proper precautions, prolonged exposure outdoors in heat, humidity, and inclement weather
  • Ability to work in confined spaces for prolonger periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
