SUMMARY
This position operates construction and maintenance equipment used in the maintenance, repair and installation of water distribution mains, valves, fire hydrants, taps and appurtenance. Oversees utility workers or a small work crew and performs considerable manual labor with the crew as needed. This position must be available to work on a rotating shift including nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.

ESSENTIAL
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates backhoe to dig around all utilities in alleys, street, easements, etc, for installation, removal and/or repairs of departmental appurtenances.
- Digs in confined areas (streets, alleys, easements, etc.) where others utilities are installed without interruption and/or damages.
- Accounts for and maintains truck and trailer and various types of equipment.
- May oversee and direct the work of personnel working on system and appurtenance repairs and installations.
- Works in trenches ranging in depths from 3’ to 35’ deep, follows all trench shoring procedures and understands the dangers of working in or around trenches.
- Ensures the proper inspection, maintenance and operation of assigned equipment.
- Accurately follows oral and/or written instructions.
- Accurately reads, interrupts, and understands maps and/or drawings.
- Assists crews throughout job tasks.
- Assists or temporarily acts as the foreperson in his or her absence.
- Properly completes daily job reports.
- May operate equipment in other comparable pay categories or be willing to train if necessary.
- Responds to 24-hour emergency callouts.
- Performs manual labor when necessary to assist in the performance of various tasks or other duties as assigned.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

- Ability to operate and make minor repairs to backhoe , 2.5 ton truck with trailer, air compressor , water pumps, jackhammers , air tamps , pipe cutter, portable generator, tap machine, drills , various hand tools and shoring equipment
- Ability to read and understand maps, use GIS and other location equipment and understand grades and percentage of grades.

REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and experience working in Utilities or a related area. Must be able to obtain a Class A Texas Commercial Driver’s License within a year or depending on availability of the CDL class. Must have telephone for emergency callouts. This position must be available to work on a rotating shift including nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel. Must be capable of passing a background check required by TCEQ. Must be able to obtain a TCEQ D Water license or higher within a year from date of hire. Valid Texas Drivers License Required.
APPENTICESHIP REQUIRMENTS

APPENTICESHIP REQUIRMENTS
Within the first 6 months the employee must complete 120 hours of backhoe operations, be involved in 20 main breaks, complete 10 new service taps, repair and/or set 5 fire hydrants. Requires the employee to trained on how to operate the chop saw, hinge cutters, guillotine cutter, travel cutter and tap machines. Employee will be required to be able to identify parts and understand how to identify pipe types and sizes. Employee will compete 20 hours training on how to use GIS mapping and look up orders in Tyler Munis. Employee will complete 8 hours training on completing job reports and how to purchase parts from the warehouse.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee must also balance, stoop, crouch, climb, crawl, walk, stand, kneel, sit, hear, feel, finger, grasp, handle, reach, speak, see, and talk. Also requires the ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions.
