Urology Nurse (GS-0610-11) - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD)


Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Mirmar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Ranch Bernado. The far northeast portion of the city encompasses Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, which holds an agricultural preserve. Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights occupy the northwest corner of the city. To their south are Torrey Pines State Reserve and the business center of the Golden Triangle. Further south are the beach and coastal communities of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. Pont Loma occupies the peninsula across San Dego Bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego (an Enclave), such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are located next to the Mexico-United States border and are physically separated from the rest of the city by the cities of National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the bottom of San Diego Bay connects these southern neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team in creating an effective plan of care for each patient. Serves as liaison between specialties to coordinate care for complex patients, and when appropriate, is the coordinator of the health care plan.

  • Collaborates with primary medical providers to identify high risk and/or socially fragile patients, for the initiation of a multi-disciplinary plan of care. Consults and collaborates with already existing departments, command and community programs to ensure appropriate resource utilization to meet the immediate and long term health care needs of the patient and the family.

  • Conducts and participates in clinic team meetings as nursing consultant and primary NurseSpecialist/Team Leader. Monitors patient progression through established treatments.

  • Assesses and monitors variances from established and accepted parameter, interviews independently or works with primary providers to initiate corrective actions as indicated.

  • Serves as patient advocate and customer service representative.

  • Maintains a clean, safe environment for the patient either by active participation in the securing/cleaning of clinical spaces and medical equipment, or by guiding and directing other personnel in environmental maintenance.

  • Ensures environmental upkeep, performs quality assurance checks and maintains required maintenance logs on medical equipment as indicated.

  • Assesses health educational needs of patient and families. Ensures the education of patient and family members concerning, but not limited to routine care, nutrition, treatment options, and community referrals. Provides verbal and written instructions to the patient and family on matters pertaining to procedures and treatments including potential risks and side effects versus the health benefit.

  • Assists in prioritizing patient requests or needs through telephone consults and monitors patient flow and workload.

  • Develops staff, patient and family education programs that comply with all Command, regulatory and Joint Commission (JC) requirements.

  • Contributes to the health care system, supports the clinical environment, provides quality services and monitors patient outcomes through the participation in Continuous improvement, Patient Safety and Research projects.

  • Assists in management of clinic business operations.

  • Participates in the development, application and monitoring of clinical pathways. Assesses and tracks variances to established parameters and Initiates corrective actions as needed.

  • Acts as change agent. Influences policy and procedures, introduces and supports new approaches to nursing practice. Practices problem identification and resolutions skills as a method of sound decision-making.

  • Plans and coordinates the training and development of junior staff.

  • Provides input on employee(s) work performance and clinical competency.

  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates work operations for the departmental team.

  • Solves problems related to departmental team performances and personnel supervised.

  • Conducts team meetings for the purpose of explaining policies, procedures and goals of the department to obtain the support of employees in the implementation.

  • Reviews, revises, plans, develops and implements policies and procedures necessary for the delivery of quality patient care to the specialty practice.

  • Directs and guides team personnel in providing both physical care and psychological support of patients and families. In situations requiring a high degree of skill, the incumbent will perform nursing duties as well as closely supervise and guide the staff assigned.

  • As indicated, performs IV conscious sedation under medical orders and is responsible for continuous EKG monitoring recognizing and treating arrhythmias, and keeping the physician informed of the patient status.


  • Performs all other duties, procedures, and assignments as directed by the Senior Nurse Officer, Directorfor Surgical Services, Senior Clinic Nurse Manager or the Clinical Medical Director.

Qualifications:
  • Must be a United States Citizen


  • Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.


  • Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.


  • Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.


  • Must have three years of clinical experience


  • Clinical knowledge of specialty practice is preferred


  • Basic and Advanced Life Support certified
