Transportation Aide


The Transportation Aide is reponsible for the safety and timely transport of inpatients, outpatients, lab specimens, morgue patients and at times hospital equipment within designated areas of the hospital.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
  • Some Hospital experience preferred.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required.
Responsibilities:
  • Has functional knowledge of Transport Tracking System and uses system effectively and efficiently.
  • Performs transportation/escorting/delivery assignments promptly, as dispatched by the Transport Tracking System.
  • Documents all transports in the Transportation Documentation Log, located at the nurse’s station.
  • Responsible for establishing the correct identity of each patient, and to determine that identification is available on the person of each patient.
  • Discrepancies, if any, in patient identification, item identification, location, etc. are resolved before the patient or item is moved.
  • Each patient's Primary Nurse is consulted before the patient is advised of the transport. If the Primary Nurse is not available, check with the Unit Secretary or charge Nurse for assistance.
  • Prior to the start of transporting patient, knows requested mode of transport. Reviews request in detail provided on the Rover Transport device (IPhone)
  • Communicates with requesting departments and informs the department of any delays, changes to the request or changes to the mode of transport.
  • Explains to patient, and parent/legal guardian the reason for transport and transport procedure.
  • Answers any questions as directed by patient and/or parent/legal guardian.
  • Reports any information relayed by the patient and/or parent/guardian in regard to abuse.
  • Assist the technologist and staff in the safe transfer from and to bed when needed.
  • Provides for patient safety during transfer process
  • Is alert to any obvious change in the general appearance or condition of the patient being transported and immediately reports such changes to the nearest nursing unit, ancillary department or safety nurse.
  • Requests nursing assistance as required.
  • Has constant awareness of any attachments accompanying patient and handles with care.
  • Identifies patient problems and reports occurrences to appropriate chain of command.
  • Utilizes the safer system to report events.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control measures. Cleans all equipment after each use (stretchers, wheelchairs, phones)
  • Preforms Hand Hygiene when entering patients’ room and when exiting room.
  • Is aware of Hand Hygiene compliance results.
  • Demonstrates correct use of PPE
  • Responsible for reporting to CODE BLUE and Rapid Response.
  • Assist with CAPACITY CRITICAL situations as needed.
  • Returns equipment to proper storage area promptly upon completion of each trip or series of trips.
  • Removes defective or broken equipment from service and reports it to supervisor for corrective action.
  • Keeps the Equipment Storage Area clean and neat (follows storage room clean up roaster) Makes sure all stretchers are parked neatly and all items including oxygen tanks are removed from stretchers.
