Transmission Line Engineer


McCall Thomas Engineering Company, Inc. is seeking a part-time, full-time, or contract Transmission Line Engineer. Will consider Engineer II, III or Sr. Engineer for this role.


Job Location: Orangeburg, SC. Hybrid remote with ability to commute to Orangeburg, SC will be considered for Engineer III or Sr. Engineer.


Work schedule options: M-TH 4X10 or M-F 5X8

McCall-Thomas Engineering is a multi-faceted engineering firm housing multiple divisions including the Communications Engineering Division, the Electrical Engineering Division, the Electric Utility Service Division, the Electric Field Operations & UAS, as well as the McT Learning Center and Print Services.


A McCall-Thomas Transmission Line Engineer will provide civil-structural engineering and technical expertise to Transmission Line and Transmission Substation engineering and design teams for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. This role will entail both direct billable client work and project management support for projects. The employee will be expected to take initiative on discipline-specific work for projects, perform assigned engineering duties and manage project schedules and budgets. He or she will also support proposal development and project cost estimating.


Primary responsibilities for this role:


  • Design transmission lines in the 69kV to 230kV range
  • Work with the Engineering Manager to define project objectives, prepare design estimates, and define project requirements and design approaches
  • Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve engineering, technical and design problems
  • Prepare thorough, timely, and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches that meet client requirements
  • Perform independent work and reviews of work performed by others including calculations, drawing preparation, and specifications.
  • Prepare transmission line models in PLS-CADD and produce all necessary construction drawings.
  • Prepare transmission line structure models in PLS-Pole and structure drawings.
  • Prepare foundation designs and drawings with PLS-Caisson, FAD Tools, and RISA Foundation.
  • Interact with clients’ engineering and technical teams on a regular basis; represent McCall-Thomas Engineering positively and professionally, and develop and maintain professional relationships with clients
  • Mentor and train less experienced design team members
  • Continually improve job-related engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills, process development, and performance

What Will You Need:

  • Eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship (required)
  • BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program
  • PE required for Engineer III or Sr. Engineer level (will consider Engineer II with FE license)
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD software
  • 7 or more years of transmission design experience preferred
  • Experience must include preparation of scopes of work, development of conceptual designs, determination of design basis, the selection of equipment and materials, and the preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications
  • Experience working directly with clients on transmission lines from 69kV through 230kV.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards including NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE and ANSI
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to commute daily to the Orangeburg, SC office location for initial training, and then weekly for corporate workdays as assigned
