TITLE: TRANSIT DRIVER II
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS
DESCRIPTION:
Under supervision, is responsible for providing public transportation in a demand response mode for the
Metro Area Public Transit System or (MAPS) and in a deviated fixed route mode for the Sunshine Lamp
Trolley. Drivers make scheduled pick-ups and drop-offs for riders, who maybe elderly or disabled. Position requires excellent knowledge of service area, safe driving skills, sensitivity toward riders, and physical ability to push and secure heavy wheeled mobility devices.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
THE FOLLOWING DUTIES ARE NORMAL FOR THIS TITLE. THESE ARE NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS EXCLUSIVE OR ALL-
INCLUSIVE. OTHER DUTIES MAY BE REQUIRED AND ASSIGNED.
- Attendance and dependability.
- Safety of passengers while in the vehicle during transit.
GENERAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
WHILE FOLLOWING TASKS ARE NECESSARY FOR THIS POSITION, THEY ARE NOT AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE DUTIES
OF THIS POSITION AND MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED BY OTHER EMPLOYEES.
- Operates equipment, such as a 25’-35’ trolley in a proper and safe manner.
- Must follow daily computerized manifest of scheduled trips, accurately count fares, push heavy wheel chairs, bend and kneel to secure wheeled mobility devices, perform daily vehicle inspections, clean and maintain equipment, and assist passengers with disabilities.

GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
LANGUAGE ABILITY AND INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
- Skill in understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other City employees and the public
- Skill in providing quick, friendly service in a fast paced environment.
- Must have a neat appearance, a pleasant attitude, and a courteous manner.
- Must be able to work closely with the public, with diverse groups of people and have good public relations and/or communications skills.
MATHEMATICAL ABILITY
- Skill in accurately count fares
JUDGMENT AND SITUATIONAL REASONING ABILITY
- Some knowledge of the proper use and storage of safety equipment, including wheel chair security straps, bio-hazard kits for emergency cleanups, and first-aid kits.

- Some knowledge of techniques for understanding/ assisting individuals with disabilities.
- Skill in effectively operating vehicle in a safe and professional manner.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of general vehicle maintenance procedures and techniques, including the ability to perform a vehicle safety pre-inspection.
- Requires high levels of: balancing, climbing, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, standing, squatting, and twisting.
- Must be able to step up and down bus steps to assist disabled passengers on and off the bus.
- Manual deployment of the wheelchair ramp requires being able to lift up to 35 pounds.
- Occasionally required to push, pull, slide, or partially lift passengers in wheelchairs/ mobility aids, bicycles, or strollers for passengers.
ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
- Comprehensive street knowledge of service area including the cities of Joplin, Webb City, Carterville, and Carl Junction.
- Skill in defensive driving techniques.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of high school or G.E.D and some experience driving professionally.
- Position requires a valid Class B or higher CDL with passenger and airbrake endorsements. Applicants without an airbrake endorsement are acceptable provided they obtain their airbrake endorsement within the first 60 days of hire.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully complete a thorough background check, and successfully complete a physical exam and drug test.
