Job Title: Tool & Die Maker

Reports To: Tool & Die Department

SUMMARY

As the Tool & Die Maker the incumbent must be familiar with every aspect of the Tool & Die Practices including but not limited to: the use of saws, lathes, mills, grinders and both manual and CNC. The individual must be willing to fill any vacant position in the department as well as showing improvement in Morristown’s primary focus of Safety, Quality, 5S, Quality and other performance driven systems. The Incumbent must also expect an extremely dynamic working environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Includes the following; other duties may be assigned)

BASIC FUNCTION:

  • This position reports to the Tool & Die Team Lead
  • The incumbent must give priority to safety around the workplace and be willing and able to follow safety standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Involvement with Morristown Meritor’s safety program offering assistance in improvements generated through the application of ideas and the creation of fixtures and / or devices as it relates to Safety .
  • Involvement with Morristown Meritor’s Continuous Improvement program offering assistance in improvements generated through the application of ideas and the creation of fixtures and / or devices as it relates to Continuous Improvement .
  • Involvement with Morristown Meritor’s Quality program offering assistance in improvements generated through the application of ideas and the creation of fixtures and / or devices such as PokaYoke, Go\NoGo and other related Quality fixtures.
  • Involvement with Morristown Meritor’s production department along with other departments offering assistance in improvements generated through the application of ideas and the creation of fixtures and / or devices as it relates to Productivity this may also include but is not limited to machine / cell installations.
  • Work with outside service providers and contractors and be knowledgeable of the practices that ensure a safe working environment.
  • Be willing and able to train others in the department to the correct procedures of machine and/or process operations.
  • Adhere and show proficiency of all duties related the position of Tool & Die Maker

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • The incumbent will be aware of and work in compliance of EPA, OSHA, and TOSHA regulations and requirements. The person must work closely with the various departments (production, quality, materials, etc.) to maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Must have advanced knowledge in tool and die practices and have knowledge of forging and metal machining equipment. Additional knowledge in the safe operation of Saws, Milling machines, Drilling/Tapping, Grinding Broaching, CNC lathes, Welding, Die Polishing, Die Assembly and also Fixturing and Rigging. Other skills may be required as new machines and practices are introduced.
  • An apprentice will be required to accumulate a complete set of personal tools as directed by the Tool Room Supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk or stand 8-10 hours a day. The employee may also be required to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The incumbent must possess the physical ability to perform intricate adjustments and repairs, using a wide array of tools and equipment, load/unload steel and tooling, enter computer commands on a terminal, perform visual quality checks, audibly detect machine problems, and possess vision correctable to a degree required to read computer printouts, written instructions, blueprints, small gauges and measuring devices, and computer/television screen readouts.
  • Must be able to operate foot and hand activated equipment, hoist, lifts, and other material handling devices. Must also possess sufficient mobility, strength, and/or dexterity in both arms/hands, and legs to: reach upward, sideways, and downward; grasp and push, pull, turn, lift, hold, maneuver, and deposit parts and/or components in a proper location and maintain balance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Heavy manufacturing environment .
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level is loud in surrounding areas.
  • Dirty conditions should be expected with uncomfortable temperatures dependent on working area.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Incumbent should possess a high school diploma or GED, Machinist 1 and Tool & Die certification or journeyman card. The incumbent must have at least 8 years’ experience or more in the machining field.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Must be able to impart information orally and audibly receive instructions, directions, and/or commands.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, B/P, specs, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must have the ability to compute machinist related equations.

REASONING ABILITY :

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. The ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Follow all safety rules and regulations and report all safety issues that are found on forging floor
