Job Summary
LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled General Computing System Administrator to join its team.
This position is located in Livingston, LA.
LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe. Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses. The LIGO Laboratory's mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.

Essential Job Duties
- Provide technical support and assistance to LIGO staff on their laboratory-provided computers and software.
- Perform laptop and workstation setup, troubleshooting and upgrades.
- Install and support site networking infrastructure and internet connectivity. Set up network performance monitoring and provide prompt response to operational problems.
- Administration of collaboration mailing list servers. Manage user authentication servers on site. Address issues, plan joint upgrades as part of collaboration-wide authentication working group.
- Administer servers maintained by the local General Computing (GC) group. Perform updating/patching of software, proactive monitoring, coordinating work with GC administrators at other sites.
- Assist with computing, communications needs for LIGO conferences, meetings.
- Ability to travel for occasional training, conferences or to support LIGO Observatory operations as required.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field of study, or equivalent experience.
- At least one year of work in computer administration in a business or research environment.
- Working knowledge of Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
- Working knowledge of computer networks and configuration.
- Familiarity with different Internet browsers and office productivity software.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
- Good problem resolution skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in configuring routers and gateways on public-facing networks, including BGP.
- Experience troubleshooting wired and wireless network connections.
- Experience with use, configuration of Linux systems and networking.
- Experience with command shell and Python programming.
- Familiarity with configuring user authentication, including Kerberos, two-factor authentication.
- Experience with computer hardware such as building a PC and trouble-shooting and replacing components.
- Experience with system restorations from backups and upgrading operating system versions.
- Experience with virtualization technology and/or hypervisor support.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and identify problems.
