JOB Description
Examples of Work Performed
- Supervise staff, including recruiting, selecting or recommending selection, training, scheduling, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, disciplining and terminating or recommending termination
- Coordinate and assist with daily language interpreting; oversees activities of staff court interpreters and independent contractors; participates in development of contracts for contractor services
- Ensures compliance by interpreters with organizational policy and procedures, and determines program deficiencies and needs and makes adjustments
- Gather information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities for area of responsibility
- Performs administrative task such as collecting data for the computation and submission of statistical records and repots, translating correspondence and other court-related documents, preparing and submitting statistical information, or preparing or assisting with preparation of periodic employee performance evaluations
- Interprets oral communications from a foreign language to English and vice versa; and renders oral interpretation of written text
- Interprets in court for defendants, judges, lawyers, witnesses, social workers, probation officers, investigators, psychologists, state attorneys, and public defenders, etc.
- Interprets for various court events, such as; pretrial conferences, bond hearings, arraignments, pleas, motions, jury and bench trials, sentencings, probation hearings, domestic violence proceedings, etc.
- May be required to work weekends and overtime on a rotation basis
- Must be able to perform duties at any one of our five (5) court facilities
- Attends or conducts employee orientation; attends and Court Interpreter’s Advisory Group meetings to exchange information; attends technical or professional classes, workshops or seminars to improve professional skills
- Performs related work as required
- Must adhere to the Florida Rules of Certification and Regulation and comply with the Court Interpreter’s Code of Professional Conduct

MINIMUM Education and Experience Guidelines
Bachelor's degree in English, source language, social science, public administration, public affairs, criminal justice, sociology or a closely related field.
Two years of court/legal related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Requires valid certificate as a Certified Court Interpreter issued by the Florida Supreme Court, Office of the State Courts Administrator.
Additional relevant experience may substitute for college education on a year-for-year basis.
Competencies
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the specialized vocabulary used in judicial proceedings
- Knowledge of the types of proceedings such as arraignments, plea bargains, motions, probation violations and sentencings
- Ability to interpret between foreign language and English; whether the language is spoken, written or recorded. Skill level must include slang, vulgarities and normal idioms
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Computer literate, with proficiency in using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
