Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Supervising Chemist is to supervise and monitor all aspects of an analytical area of the Laboratory. Responsibilities include performing testing and developing new test methods as needed. This position reports the statuses of all issues in the area of responsibility to the Director of Water Quality and Laboratory Services on a regular basis.

Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the daily operations of an analytical area the Laboratory, such as Inorganic, Organic or Chromatography.
  • Supervise the Assistant Supervising Chemist, Chemists and Technicians assigned to the area, including prioritizing, delegating, and reviewing work.
  • Review water quality data packages; notify Lab management of sample results.
  • Produce monthly reports for the methods assigned to the area.
  • Oversee and maintain all QA/QC records, including NYSDOH ELAP proficiency testing.
  • Perform continuing training of the Chemists and Technicians assigned to the area.
  • Develop new testing methods and perform complex testing.
  • Perform instrument maintenance.
  • Order and track supplies needed for area.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 10 years’ experience supervising chemical analyses of drinking water required.
  • B.A or B.S Degree in Chemistry or a related science with at least 24 chemistry credits required; M.S Degree in Chemistry preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of drinking water laboratory operations, regulations and chemical analyses.
  • Some knowledge of federal and state drinking water quality regulations and water system regulations and operations
  • Leadership, supervisory, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Proficient skills using LIMS, and the ability to perform technical and scientific analyses of chemical information and data are needed.
  • The ability to multitask, make sound decisions, and work well with others is essential.

Applicant’s typical work schedule will be Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with the requirement to function in an “on call” capacity.
