Position Overview

The Stationary Fireman position, located at the Vienna Correctional Center, will be a part of the maintenance team working in an industrial setting to operate and maintain/fire high-pressure boilers for buildings and industrial processes at the facility. The primary role of the Stationary Fireman is to fire high-pressure boilers to maintain an appropriate amount of steam to operate facility steam components. Job Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of manual tasks in the operation of the boiler house.
  • Performs repairs, cleans, and provides maintenance of boilers and equipment.
  • Consults with supervisor on daily work.
  • Supervises individual in custody workers in the proper procedures and techniques of firing boilers.
  • Remains up-to-date and in compliance with all applicable Departmental Rules, Administrative and Institutional Directives and Institutional Policies and Procedures including tool control, key control, toxic, safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years of elementary school.
  • Requires two (2) years of experience in the operation of high-pressure stationary boilers.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience observing and judging operating efficiency of high-pressure steam boilers.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with gas fired high-pressure steam boilers.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with auxiliary equipment associated with high pressure boilers such as: steam and electric boiler feed pumps, hot water and cooling pumps, cooling tower, vacuum pumps, chemical pumps.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience operating and maintaining tools used for high-pressure boilers and their auxiliaries.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience repairing, cleaning, and maintaining of boilers and equipment.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with auxiliary equipment associated with high pressure boilers to include daily and hourly reports on fuel consumption, water usage, and water level temperatures.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience communicating effectively using both verbal and written skills relaying specific job instructions.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois.
