Overview:
The primary purpose of this role is to handle the state tax audit process and assist in ad hoc state tax planning initiatives.

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $130,000 and $170,000. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities include: interacting with state auditors, researching and analyzing issues that arise during the course of the audit, responding to information requests in a timely manner, assisting in the development of formal written protests, participation in informal hearings, and preparation of recommendations for effective resolution of audits. Secondary responsibilities include:
  • Doing research and planning to provide state tax advice for business units;
  • monitoring new and proposed state tax legislation and assessing its impact to the organization;
  • prepare and review audit submissions for U.S. companies;
  • perform timely state tax research and analysis to provide advice to the business units; and
  • interact effectively with state and local tax auditors and external auditors on state tax matters.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, related field or equivalent experience
  • Master’s degree with a concentration in accounting or tax, Juris Doctorate degree or CPA preferred
  • Minimum of five years proven and progressive experience state tax matters in a major law firm or accounting firm, corporate tax department, government agency or equivalent experience
  • Financial services industry experience is a plus but not a requirement for this position
  • Should have significant experience with state and local corporate income and franchise tax audits
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel
  • Strong project management, organization, research, technical analysis and written and verbal communication skills
