The supervisor in Standards Engineering oversees staff who develop new, revise existing, and cancel outdated material, construction, and design standards for Seattle City Light. This position serves as the final reviewer and approver of publications produced by the org unit. The supervisor of Standards Engineering is a voting member of the Variance Committee.
This position reviews requests from multiple organizations within City Light as they are sent to the group, assigns tasks to the most capable and/or available employee, reviews progress, and offers direction and advice on projects within the group. The Principal reviews and approves technical standards and reports before publication. The supervisor in this group serves as a subject matter expert when requested, promotes professional engineering practices, and champions safety practices to ensure they are elevated enterprise-wide. The position performs all supervisory functions including conducting team and one-on-one meetings, tracking and approving time for the group, performing annual performance evaluations, and other daily supervisory functions as needed. This position will report to the Services, Standards & Streetlight Engineering Senior Manager.
Here is more about what you’ll be doing:
Responsible for creating standards, procedures, guidelines, and remedial action for the utility’s power system plan (“Editor-in-Chief” for all standards being published).- Review and deal with utility-wide and industry-wide standardization issues and strategies.
- Provide technical advice and serve as technical expert to the department on City Light’s electrical power system.
- Troubleshooting and failure analysis of distribution system equipment; responsible for failure analysis investigations and reporting
- Perform supervisory responsibilities for a small team of employees.
Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:
Education:
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
Experience:
Six years of professional electrical power systems engineering experience equivalent to the Electrical Power Systems Engineer level. A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.
An additional two years of supervisory, lead, or project management is required to be a supervising Principal Electrical Power Systems Engineer (eight years total).
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Washington.
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of City Light standards and procedures as they relate to creation and maintenance of technical documents.
- Understand the importance of material, construction, and design standards to ensure safe operation, construction, and maintenance of the utility’s electrical system.
- Leadership ability and the ability to supervise a diverse team.
- Ability to attract, hire, coach, mentor, and train new engineers.
- Ability to handle shifting and multiple priorities and to work as a team member in a diverse work force.
- Ability to apply critical thinking when reviewing and assessing technical information.

The full salary range for this position is $ 63.45 - $ 74.50 per hour.
