This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Greenwich Drive and remote.
DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego Health is expanding its award-winning communications team and needs an experienced writer and media relations professional capable of creative, compelling storytelling for journalists, employees and the public. They will join an accomplished, agile newsroom that is passionate about developing timely and meaningful stories that make a difference in the lives of patients, their families and the communities they serve.
This writing and media relations-intensive position contributes to the development and implementation of integrated communications plans in support of UC San Diego Health. The role requires daily writing, interaction with local, national and international media, interview coordination, award nominations and media tracking.
Writing assignments include drafting and disseminating news releases, email and phone pitches, op-eds, newsletters, magazine articles and social media posts. Successful candidates possess proven ability to translate research and clinical findings for a lay audience. Spanish-speaking is a plus.
The incumbent must maintain high standards of editorial quality in developing and publishing information on a variety of media channels and platforms. Strong copy-editing skills are required. Experience with Cision, Newswise, Eurekalert and MyEmma is a plus.
The position involves visual communications, such as video scripting and shoot scheduling. A demonstrated ability to produce and edit video is welcome.
The incumbent for this job possesses superb interpersonal communication skills that will be tapped in working with patients and health care teams, as well as with the media. They should be able to manage delicate interactions with patients or situations involving challenging or sensitive health circumstances.
This position is collaborative, working closely with all teams in the Marketing and Communications Department to generate content that continues to build and elevate the extraordinary reputation of UC San Diego Health.
Position serves as part of the on-call rotation, assisting with crisis communications and Hospital Command Center activity, as needed and required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five (5) years of experience as a journalist or public information officer.
Experience and proven success in principles, practices, concepts, and technical requirements in news, media communications and media relations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated experience in media relations, public relations or journalism in the field of health care.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $71,000 - $160,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $34.00 - $76.63
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
Job offer is contingent on successful engagement in the UC COVID-19 Vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral).
If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
