Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in special education, education, or a highly related field of study

3-5 years’ experience working in a special education setting with students with serious emotional disabilities

Must hold a valid teacher certificate in Maryland or be eligible for certification by the Maryland State Department of Education

Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Director of Education, with oversight by the Leadership Team, the Special Education Teacher provides direct instruction to the students in their assigned classroom. The teacher develops lesson plans that follow the assigned curriculum and meet state standards. The teacher provides a consistent, structured classroom environment and acts as the day to day manager for the Teacher’s Assistant and the Teacher’s Aide(s).

· Design and implement daily lesson plans in accordance with each student’s IEP goals and objectives

· Implement the school-wide behavior management system

· Design and implement a trauma-sensitive, therapeutic classroom milieu conducive to teaching students with serious emotional disabilities

· Demonstrate knowledge of emotional disturbance and ability to establish therapeutic relationships with students as it contributes to their academic, social/emotional, and behavioral growth and development.

· Administer effective and appropriate strategies during crisis situations

· Communicate professionally and effectively with supervisors, colleagues, students, parents/guardians, and visitors to the school

· Meet all establish deadlines regarding lesson plans, IEP development, report cards, and quarterly reports

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

· Exhibit flexibility and adapt quickly to changes

· Knowledge and expertise working with in a special education setting with students with serious emotional disabilities

· Strong background and knowledge of curriculum

· Excellent classroom and behavior management skills

· Excellent crisis intervention skills

· Strong professional communication skills, written and verbal

· Strong ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team and leader of a classroom team

· Ability to manage stress without it negatively effecting job performance

· Highly dependable in terms of work attendance and keeping assigned work hours

· Ability to maintain self-control in volatile/hostile situations such as being verbally and/or physically confronted by a student or family member.

· Able to set therapeutic limits and maintain therapeutic distance with students.

· Able to maintain therapeutic boundaries with children and team members.
