Job description
The Teacher plans for and provides appropriate learning experiences for residents / students with disabilities in the Residential and Day School settings. Responsible for creating a flexible lesson plan and learning environment that provides specialized instruction for residents / students with disabilities, such that the residents / students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent.
Provide direct and indirect instructional support to residents / students in a positive environment. Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the residents' / students individualized education programs (IEPs) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system. Modify the general education curriculum for residents / students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides residents / students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all residents / students. Direct paraprofessional staff for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
Confer with the Director of Educational Services, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs designed to promote students' educational, physical, social and emotional development.
Maintain accurate and complete resident / student records and prepare reports on residents / students and activities, as required by laws, Facility policies, and regulatory guidelines. Assist in collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions. Establish and maintain positive channels of communication with parents, agency staff, other stakeholders, including but not limited to regular contact regarding student progress. Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
Maintains strict confidentiality and privacy of students' and residents' personally identifiable health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy rules and Facility policies. Meets mandatory staff development requirement per the standards of all regulatory and accrediting agencies.

Minimum Education
Master s Degree in an approved program for education, preferred not required
Bachelor s Degree in an approved program for special education
Minimum Work Experience
Minimum of one (1) year in a behavioral healthcare or special education setting with the population served.
Required Licenses / Certifications
Collegiate Professional License from the State of Virginia in appropriate discipline
Postgraduate Professional License from the State of Virginia in appropriate discipline
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
First Aide
Handle with Care
Valid Driver's License in good standing
Required Skills Knowledge and Abilities
Possesses excellent human relations skills, communicating effectively with all disciplines involved in the care of residents / students and a working knowledge of the English language in written and verbal form
Ability to work well with others in a team setting and work well with a moderate level of direct supervision
Demonstrate knowledge of: the necessary principles and application of theory into practice for effective instruction and positive behavioral supports that are beneficial for implementation with residents / students with behavioral and learning challenges
Ability to provide positive behavioral support to residents / students in a group and in an individual setting
Proficient with Windows, Outlook, internet research, MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
