Job Summary:

The cardiac sonographer, under general supervision, will perform pediatric echocardiograms using proper technique when scanning and obtaining echocardiographic measurements for review and interpretation by the physician.

Job Duties:

1. Demonstrates technical expertise in the operation of all equipment utilized in the non-invasive cardiology laboratory. Current echocardiography lab utilizes GE and Phillips echo machines.

2. Ensures proper equipment operation during patient exams. Demonstrates proficiency in basic troubleshooting, equipment cleaning, storage, and preventative maintenance.

3. Ensures quality, efficiency, and safety in performance of all patient procedures.

4. Experience in echocardiography with knowledge regarding scanning infants, children, and young adults in unrepaired and repaired congenital heart disease is preferred.

5. Pediatric echocardiograms: Performs 2-D, M-mode, color Doppler, pulsed wave Doppler, and continuous wave Doppler. This includes all measurements as needed for a complete study to include parasternal long axis, parasternal short axis, apical 4-chamber, apical long axis, and apical 2-chamber, and subcostal 4-chamber view, subcostal short axis, subcostal RV outflow, abdominal aorta, suprasternal long axis of the aortic arch, and RV outflow to evaluate the MPA and branch PAs. Applies critical thinking skills to assess the patient condition to provide any additional views that will assist the cardiologist in the care/treatment of the patient.

6. Is capable of interrelating knowledge of cardiac anatomy and pathology to the operation of ultrasonography to produce diagnostic quality 2-D images and doppler frequency shift recordings.

7. Effectively communicates and explains the procedure to the patient without discussing clinical findings of the exam. Validates the patient and/or family understanding of the procedure. Able to work with infants and children and families to ease anxiety surrounding the procedure.

8. Maintains all patient reports in accordance with the group practice. This includes but is not limited to the following: pulling all previous reports/images; presenting images to the correct reading physician; notifying reading physicians of requests.

9. Performs all other duties as assigned

Education:

Associate's degree in related field is required. Bachelor’s degree in related field is preferred.

Experience:

One (1) year full-time on-the-job experience in cardiac ultrasound is required. One (1) year in the performance of pediatric echocardiograms, is desirable.

Additional Licenses and Certifications:

Registered Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS or CCI) or Registered Vascular Sonographer (ARDMS or CCI) is required.
