Job description
St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Solid Waste Supervisor for our well established Solid Waste Department located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Solid Waste Department oversees the effective management of commercial, residential waste and recycling for the County.

The newly selected Solid Waste Supervisor is responsible for supervising the day-to-day hazardous waste collection, processing, storage and disposal operations.
The ideal Solid Waste Supervisor must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:
- Supervises and coordinates the tasks and activities of assigned personnel. Evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.
- Oversees Solid Waste initiatives for compliance and utilization: hazardous waste collection, processing, storage and disposal operations; community clean-ups; the Recycle program and activities; and required inspections and reporting. Supervises the operations of transfer stations. Operates scales as needed.
- Coordinates all FDEP permits, MSBU maintenance activities, Solid Waste inspections. Monitors activities for compliance and adherence to laws, policies and procedures.
- Manages computerized database applications to develop department specific strategies regarding capital improvement projects, contract administration and operation efficiencies.
- Directs the maintenance of buildings and grounds. Manages long-term maintenance of closed portions of the landfill, including mowing, ground water monitoring, gas well monitoring, and erosion repair.
- Maintains equipment maintenance records.
- Manages and coordinates disaster-related debris removal activities as part of community recovery. Advises and follows policies regarding transportation, disposal, storage, or destruction of debris. Monitors sites for capacity issues.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
Candidates for the Solid Waste Supervisor are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related course of study to the occupational field.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with a minimum of five years combined education and applicable experience or service.
- Must possess, or have the ability to obtain within six months or as classes are available, and maintain the following Florida DEP certifications: Initial Transfer Station Operator, MRF Spotter, HAZWOPER, and Stormwater.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
- Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
- Must be able to operate a computer.
