Department Summary:

The MITRE Insider Threat Research & Solutions capability team consists of insider risk/threat practitioners and researchers. The team have education and subject matter expertise in behavioral sciences, insider risk management, and cybersecurity. Our solutions are based on 15 years of scientific research and standing up insider risk/threat programs with government and critical infrastructure sectors. The team has developed rigorous and data-driven frameworks, indicators, methodologies, mitigations, operational successes, and thought leadership to reduce the risk from harmful acts undertaken by trusted employees inside government and critical infrastructure organizations.

MITRE knows that insider threat requires a human solution and not just technology. We uniquely harness both behavioral sciences and cyber sciences to more effectively deter, detect, and mitigate insider threats. Our multi-disciplinary team consists of 20 researchers and practitioners who have worked in insider risk programs in government and critical infrastructure organizations, and/or have significant expertise applying the behavioral sciences, cybersecurity, data sciences, and intellectual property protection to insider risk.

Roles and Responsibilities:

This position involves advancing MITRE's capability to apply the behavioral and cyber sciences to critical national critical infrastructure issues, specifically insider risk and threats. Long-term project work will focus on applying human behavior expertise to projects focused on the intersection of human behavior and the deterrence, detection, and mitigation of insider risks and threats. Primary focus will include research and development working with researchers, and helping organizations build, grow, and mature insider risk programs working with practitioners. This will include developing screening/vetting characteristics, psycho-social and cyber-physical indicator development, creating and validating data-driven frameworks, developing human sensors, etc.

Research, program, and/or operational experience in deterrence, detection, and/or mitigation of insider risks (e.g., intellectual property theft, espionage, unauthorized disclosure, workplace violence, domestic extremism, research security) are highly desirable. Passion for the long-term study of insider risks and helping national as well as international insider risk programs be successful is required. International travel possible.

In addition to activities like these, opportunities exist for our researchers to conduct original research and develop innovative methods, applications, and capabilities.

The successful candidates will be flexible and adaptable, having a broad range of applied behavioral science skills, or significant experience in insider risk program development and execution (e.g., practitioners). They will perform the following functions:

  • Apply behavioral and technical sciences theories and methods to specifically insider risks and threats.
  • Lead and participate on research and development projects that focus on detection, deterrence, and mitigation of insider risk (e.g., screening/vetting, psycho-social and cyber-physical indicator development, crafting and validating data-driven frameworks, developing human sensors, etc.).
  • Develop insider risk research proposals and execute follow-on projects.
  • Engage with Insider Threat Research & Solutions capability and team to develop expertise in deterring, detecting, and mitigating insider risk.
  • Engage with national and international Critical Infrastructure Entities (e.g., telecommunications, energy, banking, etc.) and their insider risk practitioners to elevate their protections through building, growing and mature of insider risk programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.
  • Successful track record executing applied behavioral science research, or applying such research to government or critical infrastructure programs.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, teaming environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate analyses and findings to various stakeholders.
  • Must have a Top-Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with research, program, or operational experience in insider risk (e.g., IP Theft, espionage, unauthorized disclosure, workplace violence, domestic extremism, research security).
  • At least 3+ years’ experience applying behavioral science research methods including survey, experimental, qualitative, and/or quantitative methods.
  • Candidates that possess a current/active US Government clearance are preferred.
  • Peer-Reviewed Research Publications in behavioral sciences or related to threat identification or awareness.
