SUMMARY:

The person in this position will support the accounting needs of a group of railroads including the accurate reporting of railroad financial information in compliance with the company’s accounting standards. The duties and tasks of this position are frequently nonroutine. This person resolves most routine questions and problems and refers only the most complex tasks to higher levels.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monthly close responsibilities including journal entries related to fuel accruals, bad debt reserves, open PO accruals, manual invoice creation, etc.
  • Analyze financial reports and records, making recommendations to Accounting Manager relative to the accounting of reserves, assets, and expenditures
  • Prepare and verify the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications assigned to various records
  • Prepare a multitude of reports for financial, tax, and regulatory purposes.
  • Prepare analysis and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
  • Analyze trends, costs, and obligations related to financial statements.
  • Support railroad GM’s and regional staff in researching transactions.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other departments and regional personnel as needed.
  • Assist in training of staff accountants.
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits in functional area
  • Assessment of journal entry accuracy and other month-end review tasks.
  • Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Five to seven years of accounting experience
  • Strong accounting and analytical skills
  • Strong computer skills, with emphasis on Excel and Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) or other accounting software
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good problem-identification and -resolution skills

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
