Borinquen Medical Centers is seeking to hire a full-time Registered Nurse to join our team! The School Program RN will be responsible for promoting a healthy school environment that is conducive to student well-being, fosters positive behavior, and supports higher academic achievement. This program is designed to identify, prevent, or remedy student health problems and to improve access to quality health care and other relevant community supports through delivery of comprehensive services in the schools and appropriate referrals to community care.

The school based nurse will be subject to Borinquen Medical Centers of Miami Dade (BMC) Employee and Nursing Policies, following the standards within the .MDCPS & TCT protocols.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients in the school health suite. Activities are carried out in accordance with the scope of practice and standards for RN’s in the Florida Board of Nurse Practice Act. Nursing staff is subject to the annual evaluation to demonstrate their competency in assessment and disease management as it relates to Pediatric care following the policies and procedures at BMC.
  • Responsibilities of the Registered Nurse Supervisor include, but are not limited to:
  • Nursing assessment and counseling;
  • Developmental, behavioral, social, emotional screening and referral, as needed;
  • Medication administration and assistance with self-administration;
  • First aid and CPR
  • Individual Health Plan (IHP) development with safety/emergency action plans (EAP) for children with chronic conditions;
  • Chronic disease management and one-on-one education to children with chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, severe allergies, seizure, and sickle cell;
  • Complex medical procedures i.e. cardiac monitoring, carbohydrate counting, glucose monitoring, oxygen therapy, specimen collection or testing, nebulizer treatment, and intervention through administration of emergency medications;
  • Bi-annual competency assessments of a student’s proficiency in performing an invasive procedure;
  • First aid and emergency care for acutely ill children;
  • Immunization administration and follow up, and audits of student health records.
  • State-mandated screenings such as vision, Body Mass Index (BMI), and oral health;
  • Pediculosis/scabies screening;
  • Obesity intervention;
  • Oral health risks assessment, education, counseling, and fluoride varnish application to students enrolled in pre-k and K;
  • Child specific training to teachers and staff on care of children with diabetes, severe food allergy and other conditions as needed as specified in student’s IHCP and authorized by Florida law and guidelines;
  • Referral and connection of families to needed community services and resources, including other programs funded by the Children’s Trust;
  • Health education concerning identified risk factors and behavioral changes to reduce risks;
  • Preventive health education/consultation to students and school staff
  • Providing preventative health services and if applicable supporting the primary health care provider.
  • Guiding the team’s prevention and promotion educational agenda;
  • When applicable to provide recommendations for environmental changes to their supervisor.
  • Collect, analyze, and document comprehensive data and maintain data including information on follow-ups, referrals, monthly reports and other appropriate records;
  • Promote measures and programs to ensure a safe environment;
  • Adheres to the practice of confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines including BMC policies and procedures.
  • Report child abuse and neglect;
  • Adhere to state laws and School Board rules;
  • Provides supervision to nursing staff or medical assistants when warranted.
  • Consults with the Program Coordinator
  • Implement new guidelines, policies or protocols in a timely manner; and
  • Attend all mandatory Staff, BHCC, TCT, and other meetings as directed
  • Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor as required.


REQUIREMENTS

  • An active RN license in the State of Florida
  • A bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) is required for nurses assigned to high schools
  • At least one year of professional experience and knowledge of the clinical needs of students enrolled in M-DCPS
  • Ability to comply and maintain all professional licensure requirements
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of classified agency and client information
  • Knowledge of the latest principles and practices of the discipline
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work and communicate with diverse groups and individuals
  • Successful completion of mandated criminal background screening and fingerprinting as required by M-DCPS
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Effort to obtain a National School Nurse Certification is desirable
  • Fluency in multiple languages preferred
  • Must provide services consistent with the “Nurse Practices Act,” Chapter 464 Florida Statutes
  • Minimum one year experience as an RN in a Pediatric setting
  • Knowledge of scope of practice
  • Knowledge of pharmacology
  • Knowledge of medication administration, side effects and calculation
  • Knowledge of infection control
  • Knowledge of the nursing process and its application, including assessment, diagnosis, implementation and evaluation.
