Position Highlights
The Research Technician is responsible for planting, growing, and harvesting agricultural research crops. Research topics to include: optimizing fertilizer rates, industrial hemp cultivation, water and soil health conservation, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Information gathered will be presented freely to the community in public workshops and seminars by the supervising agent. The ideal candidate will enjoy working outdoors.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Upkeep: Maintain equipment quality and agronomic needs of field trials.
  • Applications: Calculating mix rates and applying experimental agricultural chemicals to research crops.
  • Note Taking: Record field trial observations (stand counts, stem height and diameter, yield, etc.) and discuss data with supervising agent.
  • Coordination: Working with university research station and commercial farms to setup and carry out field trials.
  • Publication Assistant: Assist supervising agent with summarizing data and editing publications and periodicals.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Operational knowledge of Microsoft office suite (Word, Power Point, Excel).

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Pesticide applicator’s license or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.
