Research Technician
- (3237550)GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Neurosurgery Department and Neuroendocrinology Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) are seeking a motivated Research Technician to assist in the generation of large-scale genomic data, with an emphasis on single-cell RNA-sequencing, CITE-seq, and exome sequencing data. The technician will prepare DNA and RNA libraries (bulk and single-cell) from patient samples, cell lines, and mice, which may entail antibody staining and cell sorting. The technician will also transport samples to the Broad Institute for sequencing and maintain a record of all samples, including associated downstream data and sequencing work orders. The scientist will work in a highly collaborative environment, involving extensive interaction and communication with research faculty, clinicians, molecular biologists, and bioinformaticians.
- Prepare DNA and RNA libraries (including bulk and single-cell) for sequencing
- Execute cell dissociation and preservation protocols
- Perform antibody staining and cell sorting
- Track samples and data associated with each sample, including but not limited to sample ID number, date of acquisition, clinical diagnosis, library quality metrics, sequencing status, sequencing quotes, and work orders
- Solve practical problems relating to equipment, reagents, or samples; suggest technical or procedural improvements in methodology and workflow
- Procure and track quotes and work orders from research cores at the Broad Institute, MGH, etc.
- Maintain a laboratory notebook
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Proficiency in basic tools of molecular biology, e.g. PCR (Required)
- Experience in genomic library preparation
- Experience in single-cell RNA-sequencing library generation
- Experience in antibody staining and flow cytometry
- Experience in mammalian cell handling (culture, dissociation, etc)
- Proficiency in Excel, Google Docs, and other tools for data tracking
- Meticulous organizational skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
Requires a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field.
New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) will be considered for a Research Technician I position.
Those with a minimum of 1 year of directly related work experience will be considered for a Research Technician II position.
