Responsibilities

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children is looking for compassionate and experienced nurses to join our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). In this role, you will provide direct patient care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of specialists to develop and implement individualized care plans. You will also be responsible for educating families on their child's condition and providing emotional support.

As a PICU RN, you'll be responsible for providing the highest level of medical care to critically ill or surgical pediatric patients. PICU RNs provide intensive nursing care and continuous monitoring of breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure, so you must have strong clinical knowledge in addition to a caring bedside manner.

Pediatric ICU nurses have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
  • Providing emotional support to patients and their families during difficult times, such as death or serious illness
  • Monitoring patient vitals such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, temperature, and weight on a frequent basis to ensure they are within normal limits
  • Monitoring the child's progress and communicating with other health care professionals regarding treatment plans and patient progress
  • Performing physical examinations on patients, including listening to lungs with a stethoscope and checking pulses in arms and legs
  • Preparing infants for feeding by suctioning out their noses and mouths with a bulb syringe
  • Monitoring the infant's feeding schedule, administering feeding through a tube that has been inserted into the stomach through the navel, and changing diapers as needed
  • Recording information about patient symptoms, reactions to medications, and progress during nursing assessments
  • Observing and documenting patient behavior, including interactions with family members, visitors, and staff members
  • Providing emotional support to patients and their families during difficult times, such as death or serious illness

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse licensure or temporary practice permit.
  • BLS via American Heart Association
  • Prior work experience suitable for the position is preferred.
