Job description
LARC provides centralized care to a variety of species housed at various campus locations. The EVCP Business Services unit is responsible for the procurement of small and large animals for LARC and researchers with approved research protocols. The Purchasing Specialist has independent responsibilities for the following duties:
Purchasing Specialist: Orders various species of animals used at UCSF for research. The incumbent maintains animal order records, places orders with the appropriate vendors, resolves receiving discrepancies, generates billing information for cost recovery from research grants and other faculty resources and insures compliance of all University policies.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications
- High school graduation and four years of related administrative experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated database experience
- Ability to meet deadlines, complete orders without error and maintain records
- Ability to communicate (both verbal and written) effectively at all levels. Strong customer service skills
- Critical position: fingerprinting and background check required
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree and one year administrative experience or Associate Degree and two years administrative/office experience
- Knowledge of several computer software applications including purchasing database (RIO & BearBuy) Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word
- The desire to learn and the ability to act independently as well as to work effectively as a team
- Previous purchasing experience in a laboratory, academic or biotechnology environment
