DEFINITION: The role of the LAD Department Secondary Program Specialist is to build capacity and provide support that ensures all English Learner (EL) students develop proficiency in academic English and have
equitable access to a standards-based Comprehensive English Language Development (ELD) instructional program. The position is designed to support the consistent implementation of the District's Title III Initiatives, Arizona's Language Development Approach (LDA), English Language Development (ELD) standards, and related professional development and instructional planning for EL students. In addition, provides training and support to both certified and classified staff at all school sites in ensuring that all areas of compliance in EL programs are understood and followed.

REPORTS TO: Director of Language Acquisition and Literacy
TASKS:
  • Plans and delivers professional development to administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents in accelerating academic achievement via Integrated and Targeted ELD.
  • Conducts demonstration lessons and provides feedback to teachers on the effective and evidence based Integrated and Targeted ELD methodologies to ensure equitable access to core standards-based instruction for EL students.
  • Develops model lessons that provide Integrated and Targeted ELD to ensure access to grade-level content area instruction for EL students.
  • Assists and supports teachers in the implementation of the District's Title III Initiatives, including Integrated and Targeted ELD instruction and provides feedback to teachers on the use of instructional strategies and classroom practices related to Arizona's Language Development Approach, ELD standards-based classroom instruction.
  • Supports teachers to include High Impact Essential Practices to accelerate proficiency in academic English for EL students.
  • Supports teachers to manage, interpret and use evidence; systematically examine student work, plan and deliver appropriate instruction, intervention and accommodation strategies for EL students.
  • Participates in assigned local district professional development to support initiatives related to EL student achievement.
  • Serve as the main liaison between the school sites and the Department of Language Acquisition and Literacy, in compliance procedures, data and monitoring of the EL instructional model.
  • Assist in maintaining the database for EL information which includes initial English proficiency assessment, reclassification and monitoring of EL student
  • Assist in the enforcement of compliance procedures in the District. Assist in the internal monitoring of these procedures at all school sites.
  • Assist schools with the planning and implementation of summer programs and other extended-day programs for ELL students.
Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with the District

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of District policies and procedures.
Knowledge of instructional methodologies and effective research-based strategies to promote achievement for diverse learners
Knowledge and experience teaching in core content areas (English/ELD, History/Social Science, Mathematics, Science).
Knowledge and experience in designing and delivering professional development using adult learning theory.
Strong computer skills, especially in the use of the Google Suite and the district student information system (PowerSchool)
Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administrators
Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in an indoor environment. Work requires frequent sitting, repetitive motion, and vision to monitor and may require some lifting.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor degree in Education. Secondary Certification required.
Endorsement in SEI, English as a Second Language or Bilingual Education
Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Minimum of three years of successful classroom experience at the secondary level

Depending on the needs of the District, some incumbents in this class must be able to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.

Salary: Refer to PNT 260 Salary Schedule Hours per Day: 8 Days in Contract: 260 Start Date: 2023/2024 School Year
